I played Thief 1 on Easy spread over months. I recall finding out there were extra Expert-only sections in some of the OMs I'd never seen. It was only later I mostly played on Expert. I think players will gravitate to Expert in TDM in the same way over a year or so.
That said, TDM is a tad more difficult and of course, it is mostly up to the FM maker how difficult each level is. Maybe more of us who were drawn to Dark Mod tend to make FMs harder.
Blackjack - can't say it too often - stand further back than in Thief.

I've been playing a lot of TDM missions lately, and this is absolutely right. Early on, I played a few FMs where I was getting spotted and busted a lot and got extremely frustrated, but eventually realized it was more about the author either not providing good hiding spots/shadows or not spacing AI properly. Many of the more recent missions seem to address these problems and it's made a huge difference for me in gameplay.

I think a part of this has to do with FM authors not realizing that the ambient_world affects the light gem. It's important to adjust the ambient_world so that it is just barely lifts the shadows and doesn't affect the lightgem. If an FM author insists on having a brighter ambient_world for artistic reasons, they should probably use the lightgem offset setting to lower the lightgem a tiny amount so the AI aren't busting the player too easily. It's just a setting that gets set on the player entity. I think it's called lg_offset

I just wanted to tell you that it's all working in win2k for me now too. The new FM-download tool is great.

Well it's been nearly a year since I tried TDM, so I installed it tonight. 3 problems right away with TDM itself.
1. The mission selection screen text is blurry and a bit faint in spots and it hurts to read it. No amount of AA and/or AF fixes this.
2. The font used in-game in the lower left and lower right corners is barely readable. I think this one is a known bug.
3. The in-game FM downloader listed 2 FMs that I already had. One said it was an update. I grabbed both and now the FM list shows 2 copies of the exact same FM, same version.
I've only played one FM so far and it blows. I won't bother naming it. I've seen better textures in T2, lockpicking takes all week and being seen in total darkness from several feet away is not fun. I'm hoping these issues are due to a poorly made FM and not endemic to TDM itself.
I'll try a few more FMs and see.

For perspective, how well did the Training Mission run? Was the lockpicking in the FM like the lockpicking in Training, or different? If the Training mission lockpicking takes forever, than it's just you, so we want to elminate that possibility.

I didn't play the training mission yet. I'll have to post back on that one.
I just played another FM and now I'm sure TDM has serious visual issues. Everything is a bit blurry. AA and AF have zero effect. And all the fonts are far too small. I don't have these issues with any other games, not even the Thief series.
Maybe the game wasn't intended to be played at 1920x1080, but if that's the case, then it shouldn't be supported in the settings menu.
Also, there's no way to aim the arrows. Why not? This just makes me want to use Cheat Engine to keep from wasting precious arrows.
