I would suggest "The Knighton Manor". It isn't too tough and it gives you that open-ended experience. However you choose to infiltrate the place and complete the objectives is up to you. There are multiple entrances.
There were some great early missions too, like Living Expenses and The Chalice of Kings.

Definitely start with the Training Mission so you can try out many of the new features. After that, I'd recommend starting with a small, simple mission to get your feet wet. The following are good candidates:
Outpost
Too Late
Thieves
The Parcel

Special Delivery is also a small mission I find myself replaying with some regularity.

I would consider "Special Delivery" of higher difficulty though compared to the rest. "Pandora's Box" is also pretty small and rather easy.
"Living Expenses" feels pretty big and has a couple of harder difficulty moments, but also features some really classic thief gameplay. I really love that mission. If it had been up to me, there would still be no winner to the Grand Christmas Contest 2009. It was really a close call between Melan's "Return to the City" and Sonosuke's "Living Expenses" to me.

Is it possible to sort the missions in the Built-in Mission Downloader by release date?

I don't think we can do that yet, but I can propose it for a future update.

I'll second that request. I often sort by date in Darkloader to pull the most recent missions to the top.
