That's nice, but a bit of a gimmick. How is the core game progressing? :p

It's only a gimmick if people don't plan their usage of it properly....much like dynamic shadows in TDS. There were very few times where they actually made a huge difference and encouraged the player to move something to create a shadow to hide in. The mapper can think about object placement with moving clouds and how the light can create or remove shadows. Pretty interactive stuff.
As we mentioned on our main forums, this isn't a new feature...it has been finished for quite awhile... it's a year and a half old.
The core work is coming along just fine, that's what everyone is focusing on. It's pretty difficult to address exactly how the core work is progressing without simply posting an SVN log of all the updates and code commits.

The main mod continues to get more and more "finished". It's still a long ways off, but if everyone on the project dropped dead tonight and someone managed to release the mod, it would still be awesome and pretty much fully workable/playable right now. The core movement is where I think it really shines - mantleing especially is very reliable and easy, so you can really smoothly make your way around any terrain with an enjoyable athleticism almost akin to something like Assassins Creed or Prince of Persia (but of course not exactly). The movement and control is zillion times better than wobbly TDS, and I think it's even improved over Thief 1/2.

The mantling was definitely one of the best things about Thief's Den. I never had any problems with it at all, unlike DS or T1/2.
That cloud cover/light gem thing could totally alter the way you play a mission so I can't see why you'd think it was just a gimmick, Melan. It's another level of realism.

Yeah, it's much less of a gimmick and more of a matter of "Ah! At last!"
Now if the clouds could actually cast shadows....

Thanks for the updates.
I maintain that cloud cover is not the main stuff the mod is made of. Of course, it will be nice if implemented, but I could do without - while, say, a nice sword fighting system is a must.
I concur on the mantling, if what we saw in Thief's Den was the final deal. That's almost catlike! :thumb:

Heh. I'd prefer anything that increased the atmosphere and tension of stealth over any combat system for a Thief-related game.
It would be nice if the combat system was smooth and intuitive, but I don't think it should have priority.:ebil:

Has the mantling been improved since the Alpha Demo?
Shadak on 1/9/2008 at 11:20
Not majorly but I think it's been tweaked some
