Yeah, I guess the combo of horrible editing allowing Batman and Rachel to fall an entire building height, hit a cab and survive plus Joker showing up and leaving abruptly just annoys me, but a few other beats in that fundraiser hit the mark pretty well.

- Joker dieschange: Joker gets hurled off roof as before, sailing towards cars, cackling, laughing, Batman tries to save him but fails[/spoiler]
I really like the stuff about keeping Dent/Two-Face in the shadows for the third film but I really don't like this point. To me this kind of stuff is just a cop out so the bad guy can die without good guy having to get his hands dirty. I know what you are going for but this kind of shit happens all the time in films. I also really loved the exchange between the two after
Batman saves the Joker A better idea is what Tonamel suggested, although he got the comic wrong it's actually 'The Dark Knight Returns', where
Batman almost crosses the line but can't quite finish the job so the Joker does it for him. Then the cops find the corpse and Batman is labelled a murderer.

tries to save him and fails, yet another failure, that also lets him get seen as a murderer by the cops who witness the Joker's plunge.
But mostly, it's because when I saw that scene with the Joker freefalling towards all the cop cars, it just felt right to me that he should just
kersplat. :D

I was more referring to Ledger's delivery of those lines. I love his mocking tone and the line about self-righteousness and the fact they are destined to be together.
I see your point about
kersplat, I thought it too, but I think it's better the Joker lives so his character and relationship with Batman can be developed further in the next film. That kind of thing never happens in superhero films since the bad guy is always dispatched by the end of the film. Of course that is all moot now unless Nolan has the stones to recast the Joker. It's a real shame because I think that the Joker could have even moved into a Hannibal Lecter type role where he is locked away but Batman needs his help for some reason.

Well, there's ways in which they could handle it... I mean, it's an interesting concept - the whole Hannibal Lector thing - and one would first have to account for the changes the Joker's personality would undergo when incarcerated... is he on meds? is he depressed? An almost cool thing would be to have a darkened cell, where a sluggish, depressed Joker's voice can only be heard, occasional shifts in the shadows. But yeah, who knows where they'll go next, all I know is I'll be there on opening night.

I haven't spoken to anyone who felt the movie really needed the Hong Kong plot. It should have been the first thing to go.
The second would have been Scarecrow, too tacked on. Keep the scene otherwise intact though, the movie needed more of Batman beating up villains.
thefonz on 12/8/2008 at 06:29
I actually liked the HK scene. The whole sequence from Batman (ARE WE REALLY USING SPOILERS NOW?!) jumping off the building, gliding around and the obvious tension in the office building to the genius of the sky-hook and the edit of music and photography had my heart racing.
Even if it didnt do anything to further the plot - except to put the wee chinese guy in prison for Joker, it was a cool scene and I'm happy to leave it in in "my" cut of the movie.

It was an intersting choice for Lau not to make a sound as the flames around him grew higher. It made Lau seem forgotten by all, and effectively, he was. It also made the Joker's dialogue with the thug easier to pay attention to, but I kept expecting some off-camera muffled cry or something. I know he didn't make a sound when the stack of bills smacked him in the face, but....
I'm hoping the DVD/Blue Ray release makes it possible to view a three-hour-plus cut of the film, as the theatrical release absolutely seemed too whittled down here and there across the board.
