I think it's been pretty much a given for the longest time that Two-face is the villian for the third film and this film is being used to set him up. I really doubt that after all the work they have put into to creating a really great Joker, who is Batman's greatest enemy, that they would relegate him to a background character.

From what I understand Fonz has it right. Primary villains for the first two acts are the mob families warring over the post-Falcone organized crime power vacuum, with Joker running around causing more or less random havoc and making Batman look bad, act three is Two-Face. Film three was supposed to be primarily about the Joker, but that's probably changed, considering the current state of Ledger.

I suppose it wouldn't be awful if the Joker's demise is ambiguous at the end of the film (like the Scarecrow's from Batman Begins) though I would've preferred it if they'd managed to close the door on the character.
I wonder how Harvey/Two-Face is going to be handled anyway, if he's going to know Batman or just be aware of him - the comics had them being relatively close, didn't they?

Sort of - in the comics Harvey had a relationship with Bruce, but actually ends up blaming Batman for his disfigurement iirc.

Yeah, read through the Wiki page also -

In the film, Dent becomes a murderous vigilante—rather than an outright criminal—following his disfigurement
This makes sense too, I suppose. Having been against crime as a DA, it doesn't fit that he'd just become a crime boss after being scarred (unless they had his mind snapping) and so it makes sense.
Maybe
Two-Face kills the Joker?

That is exactly what Two-Face is supposed to be, he is a vigilante like Batman except he crosses the line that Batman won't ie murder. I hope he only becomes Two-Face at the end of the film since the rest of it should be focusing on creating the relationship between Bruce and Harvey. What I didn't like from the trailers is that it seemed more like Harvey was the 'other guy' in the love triangle rather than Batmans trusted ally. But Nolan isn't an idiot so I have faith I am simply misinterpreting the trailer.

That's an interesting comment when you consider that neither trailer features Ledger's Joker with a huge grin on his face.
Well, it's his disfigured face that is supposed to represent the whole idea of him looking like a grotesque joker. The comics take it more literally, as did the early shows and movies. This movie is treating it more like a disfigurement than an actual perfect smile. A bit more reality based perhaps.
