You expect the Church to say, "well, we used to be assholes, so who cares if millions of Americans now think we're a bunch of cilice-wearing sadists bent on world domination?"?
I'm too late to the party, aren't I?

Though from my reading of TDVC, is it not more accurate to say that one lowly member of Opus Dei was the murderer, rather than the whole organisation?

Wasn't he also albino?

Yes, there is one murderer, who is in turn controlled by a Bishop who is also part of the organisation IIRC.

Ah, but the bishop seconds him to the Teacher and doesn't actually order the murders, no?

Oh right. As I said, I couldn't really remember. Still, that means that the Bishop, the member of a group which also has a murderous albino in its numbers, was plotting with a known detractor of the Church. I'm not saying it's incendiary or anything, anyone with half a brain shouldn't give a shit, so I don't want to get dragged into arguing this.
And holy shit, Ton, that's fucked up.
Matthew on 23/5/2006 at 11:18
No, no arguing. I was just really putting it forward as another point to wonder why Opus Dei were getting all upset - Brown's writing about rogue members, after all, and I don't see the CIA protesting every time a film shows a rogue agent.
Though the 'distilled to the lowest common denominator for the masses' factor does come in, I suppose.

Even better in the fight against stereotyping:

What's important is that people realise not all female cryptographers are enchanting, or even sexy. Some of us are thoroughly plain, bordering on dowdy, and couldn't smile in a cutesy, pixie-ish manner if we tried.
Sadly, I suspect the Alliance doesn't exist at all, let alone actually said this, since I've only seen this quote in articles quoting it and can't find any other references to them anywhere. But I'd love to be proven wrong.

I love it when contravertial issues are raised.

Particularly when religious nutters are involved...
