Really good smackdown on Brown and the Davinci Code by an agnostic historian (
http://scienceblogs.com/gnxp/2006/05/why_the_dumb_vinci_code_matter.php) here
Regarding Dogma, I believe Steve Sailer noted in his review that almost everyone should be a great-great.....grand nephew/niece of Jesus by now. Due to (somewhat distant) inbreeding, some people will have more Mary&Joseph genes than others, but most people will have a bit.
Regarding the Holocaust, the Pope saved more people than Oscar Schindler from it.

You do know the davinci code is based on someone beliving that a con by three french men is the absolute truth. In that the evidence presented in the con is truth, and not a work of pure fiction to make 3 french men some money off some stupid people who would believe their con as truth.
before the 1930/40's the priory of sion never existed, its named after the village of sion that one of the con men came from in france.
the two mary's who went to france, who had a young girl with then, their egyptian slave called sarah. Had nothing to do with mary magdaline, as they went there many centries after she was dead, and therefore aint related to someone who was nailed to a tree.

This is exactly my beef (from the agnostic guy's review):
Quote:
Additionally, adding a rival superstition about the Bible (that is, beliefs which are extra-empirical or rational, but based solely on religious traditions) to the discourse muddies the waters. Instead of a clean match between scholarship and inerrantism, you have a three-way dance between scholarship, inerrantism and pseudo-history. And, the more pseduo-history enters the discussion the harder it is to identify the genuine scholars (as opposed to apologists). Also, as noted above, the fundamentalists become more sure and confident of themselves when they find that Ph.D.s with Greek under their belts are backing up "their" talking points.
As someone who tends to lean toward the position of the bible being more fact than fiction, people like Brown absolutely fuck up the dialogue between the two legitimate viewpoints.

The average moviegoer can barely distinguish between Jesus and Santa Claus, nevermind make informed distinctions concerning the Bible's historical authenticity. Brown has merely made a fast buck by exploiting the public's ignorance of history. By the time X-men 3 comes out, everything will be long forgotten.

Ya know, the people who get upset about "OMG, he said this was all fact, but he's lying" are quite often the same people who think that everything written in the bible is 100% true in the first place.
Just saying, is all.

Bah - not true. I'm actually disturbed more about his distortion of history than anything else. If I were to state in these forums that the Holocaust 'in fact' never actually happened, and was all a hoax, surely there would be quite an upset that extended beyond the Jewish population here.
There is danger in someone dismissing the Holocaust as fiction because an individual's perception of history affects their worldview, and eventually (maybe only in subtle ways) affects the decisions they make and the way they treat those around them.
There is danger in someone adopting the view that early church councils murdered and manipulated to gain control over the population. It causes them to take a shallow view of history (from Hellenism all the way to the Elightenment) which affects their worldview, and possibly, various decisons they make.
Either way, ignorance of history is IMO one of the most dangerous things to be ignorant about, especially on a global level. We're talking 20 million people reading Davinci code at this point. Obviously not the most important issue in the world, but cause for concern nonetheless.
