Consider that a new game costs at least €50 these days.

In the USA a computer game still goes for $50 USD. And within the first few weeks you can expect somebody, whether it be in store or online to drop it by $10-15 for a week.
Right before EBGames went out of business they were selling off their used PC games really cheap, so I went in looking for SS2, but never found it. Did get a DOS copy of X-Com though for $10 USD (which was pricier than other things they were selling, but hey, it is X-Com).

You never said how much you paid for it or how much you consider to be an outrageous price.

I paid $75 USD. Plus shipping. But I got 8% off with an Ebay coupon; yay!

That's roughly €55. A new game tends to cost around €45-50 here, which means you're paying roughly €5-10 more than it would cost if it was a new game for the rarity factor.
And I strongly suspect that SS2 is a better game and therefore better value for money than most if not all of those €50 titles - though of course I'm surely biased.

I knew I'd be getting something awesome, and had grown tired of prowling Ebay and half.com for a cheap copy (time is money, and it was taking too much of my time). So I finally caved and bought it, even though by design I'm a frugal person and the idea of paying any percentage above the price of a new game, for a used one, kills me, heh.
It IS better than most new games hitting these days. Not to mention longer and with more replay value. I'm not sorry I bought it. Even though, undoubtedly, Gog.com will somehow magically get the rights and release it for $6...

Or maybe they'll stick it on steam for $20...

It would be nice if it was re-released somehow - But - is the source code for SS2 available, so that they can fix it to work on new PCs? I think the situation is the same as with Thief games. This will probably have to wait until someone can come up with some virtualization solution (equivalent of DosBox for older windows games).

If it is - and that's a big if - EA probably has it, and I doubt they'll ever do any improving on it.
