I recently saw NIN at a really small venue in Paris (Olympia), which was amazing. Not so amazing is that I was just getting the start of a middle ear infection and was in severe pain for the second half of the gig.
This led to me missing them in Berlin where I had a ticket, which was shit. However, I got to see them again at the Mad Cool festival in Madrid. here is my rundown in order of preference of the bands I had a chance to see*:
So, in order of my enjoyment:
Depeche Mode
Nine Inch Nails
Jack White
Alice in Chains
Young Fathers
Franz Ferdinand
Queens of the Stone Age
Tame Impala
Pearl Jam
*Didn't catch many other bands, largely due to the festival organisation being incredibly bad, but fortunately the quality of the music made up for it

Now that would have been great (seeing the performances, not the ear infection).

I just came home from Orbital live in Glasgow. I was really too tired to go, but a friend dragged me out. Support act Plaid.
I vaguely knew of Plaid from 12-odd years ago, but only have 2 albums, and didn't listen to them enough. I was pleasantly surprised from what I heard, but for much of it, we were either in a pub or waiting in line to buy beer, and difficult to hear it properly. A bit like early Aphex Twin or Autechre, but with occasional acoustic elements, there were two guys on keyboards and a guitarrist on stage. I'm definitely going to look them up on Spotify.
Orbital were great. I've only seen them live once before, at a rock festival maybe 2002/2003. 4-5 new songs I hadn't heard before, great reworkings of old favourites. Crowd was good, I expected just a load of old fat blokes like myself, but range from toddlers to teens to, yes, old fat blokes like myself, to even older, fatter, balder guys. I found it quite amusing to see a guy 60+ with grey strands of hair, hunched over, struggling to walk, wearing an Orbital t-shirt. Audience knew their stuff. Bounced a lot. Cheered when needed. Band seemed pleased. Good show.
In retrospect, as tired as I was before going, I'm happy I went. I don't usually see good live music nowadays, and this was pretty damn great.
Pointless note, but nevertheless something that amused me:
I don't buy band t-shirts. I can't commit to just one band. But, I want to wear something to gigs. So, a few years ago, I printed a t-shirt listing a few bands I like, in short form: "FLA242KMFDMNINDMKWTMBGUW808" on the front, and just one line at the back, "I like music.". Tonight I wore that t-shirt, and at the pre-party pub a guy walked up to me and asked me where I got the shirt. I said I made it. He said he was the former drummer of Cubanate, now in Jesus Loves America, and produced by one of the guys in one of the bands on my shirt. I used to listen to Cubanate. Small world.

That sounds awesome Gray. I love Glasgow for gigs, been to a few in the O2 Academy and Barrowlands in the last few years. Last one was Frightened Rabbit in March, their final gig. Also saw them in Barrowlands last December (I think?), got to see James Graham from Twilight Sad duet with Scott Hutchison - wasn't into TTS back then, but have been listening to them intensely since Scott's death.

Soon I will see Twenty One Pilots for the fourth time with Starr. We saw three times in one tour over two years last... Oakland, Berkeley, Sacramento. At first (Oakland) I was unhappy for the house full of kids yelling along ah but soon I was yelling too and so nice!
I will never see The Tragically Hip again because Gord has died of brain cancer. Also Bowie and Beastie Boys. But soon I will have more to see! I saw Lady Gaga and it was amazing (coming from a man who did see AC/DC and Huey Lewis and Gowan and Doctor Hook) but soon I will wait what
So I am going to use tickets to see Twenty One Pilots on November 11 (remember remember) and two out of three of the released tracks off the new album are great JUNK FOOD JUNK FOOD COVER ME!!
I have forgotten where this argument was going!

Nice to see you, GBM.
Going to see Mastodon in September. I've seen them once before, but the sound sucked. (I hate going to concerts in general at the venue they played at when they were in town- seems like the sound always sucks there). But this is up north a ways at a different venue, so we'll see.
Also this weekend I'm going to get to put on a concert of my own. My band just finished our first album and released it on all major streaming services. This Saturday is our release show at a sizable local venue. Should have a pretty big turnout, I'm hoping!
