I've never been a fantastic student in terms of mathematics, yet after High school I kept to that route and wanted to earn a degree in Computer Engineering. It's been a lot of work so far. I'm a second semester sophomore, and have probably about 3 more years to go at Penn State. Engineering degrees are supposed to take about 5 years for some reason here at Penn State. There hasn't been a whole lot of drinking for me, not that the option hasn't been available, but I haven't wanted to drink "for the wrong reasons". My dad's a raving alcholic and I'd rather not become him. Most of my problems in school actually have come from him rather than my studies heh. That's a longer, more boring story that I don't see the need to tell.
Studies at Penn State are difficult. Not being a math student means I work my ass of in calculus and physics, only to pull Cs or Bs (rarely Bs), while I get As in the other courses I am taking. Computer Engineering is pretty much Electrical Engineering with Computer Science tacked into it. The Computer Science part is easy to me, because I've been programming forever in a day now.
As for friends and having good times, there have been plenty. Recently I volunteered to chair race. The objective of the game was to run across a whole shit load of chairs to the other side of the room and not fall off. Some other things I did involved a Nerf Rocket to the throat, it hurts. As well I ambushed a professor with a couple pals of mine with Nerf guns. There's games, lots of games, specifically Street Fighter Third Strike. And well should I mention D&D? I don't like it a lot, I prefer the WoD style rules. You can see that most of my fun is nerdy, but I kinda enjoy it that way. I found my girlfriend (whom I've been with for a year and half now) watching Star Wars. I have gone to parties to drink before too though, you just gotta be in the right crowds. Also, get involved on campus with the people that work there, like government or campus life. Penn State has THON which is a whole lot of work and fun.
It really doesn't matter what you do as long as you have fun and study well.

In response to the original question, I went to a state sponsored (in other words, cheap) college.
Hmm, PeeperStorm's from Redding. Would that be the infamous
CHICO STATE we're talking about???

Holy fucking crap, I hope you're raped by a goat.

Holy fucking crap, what's with all the psycho-science-hate? He didn't insult her, just politely noted a common reasoning flaw. I'm going to assume Mr. Alchemist was joking, otherwise he has serious mis-directed anger management issues.

Holy fucking crap. He was being a huge dick, and somewhat acknowledged that himself, and jesus christ your hair is blue.
"But it's alright I met my husband there who I love very much <3 <3 <3"
"Lol that doesn't change the fact that you're a failure and you probably married the wrong guy anyways BIATCH."
An exaggeration, of course, but it seems one has to outline things as such for some people to get a clue.

Also "But it's alright I met my husband there who I love very much <3 <3 <3" really isn't the kind of sentiment that you should be jumping on and pulling apart with an attack on the reasoning behind it.

Um marriage. Yeah I'm sure she's thinking "I'm so happy I made the probabilities of finding someone with my likes and dislikes and with a predisposition to date while I was in college, it was all worth it I guess"
Actually, I didn't get married until 11 YEARS after I met him, so it's not an issue of me going to school "to find Mr. Right". That was the last thing I wanted. We broke up after the first year or so because I wasn't ready to get married. I still wanted to play.
Basically, the whole college thing sucked for me, and I didn't want to be there. I'm not implying that anyone should use college to hook up with their soul mate, though some people do. I just prefer to focus on one of the few glimmers of brightness in an otherwise shitty experience.
