I had originally planned on graduating in 3 years, but now my folks want me to do it in 2 and a half (that's 5 semesters for those keeping track). I certainly don't want to do grad school, as a bunch of people have suggested (I guess I just give off nerd vibes). Although I've been avoiding maturing for some time now, I realize that I'll have to be an adult (in behavior, I've got the legal age thing down) eventually and don't want to stay long in the Wacko World of university, especially since I dislike university students so much. I haven't applied for university housing and the deadline is approaching so I guess I'll be getting the Apartment and Roommate Experience next year. I haven't actually gone looking for any places or people to room with because the reason I didn't apply was one of my dad's co-workers owns a house in the area and I didn't know whether I'd be staying there or not. After I get back from break I'll check that out, and if it doesn't strike my fancy (i.e it's too far from class) I guess I'll start perusing ads for places to live. I know I want to be a programmer after I graduate, but I haven't thought of anything more specific than that, so I'll look for a summer internship (don't know where yet) and see how I like it.
I'm not a very responsible drinker (I believe I've already detailed that earlier on this forum) so I don't drink very often. I tend to be rather busy at any rate, but my classes next semester seem lighter so that might change.

One who's there on a 9 month student visa and who can get kicked out of the country if he commits so much as a misdemeanour, maybe?
Fair 'nuff.
It sounded like you couldn't actually GET alcohol. In that situation, not being willing to risk it is another matter entirely (though, honestly, possession by a minor is usually no more than a violation and a slap on a wrist, no doubt even for a student on a visa).

Joined the US Navy. I did 4 years on an Amphibious assault ship during Desert Storm, and the Somalia and Mogadishu Humanitarian efforts. Wasn't to bad overall, got 4 years of Machine work training, and got to go to Singapore, Hong Kong, Hawaii several times, one time I was lucky enough to see Jerry Garcia.
Australia was by far the best. We were supposed to make a stop in Bali, but that got nixed for some reason.

I busked my way around the UK and then lived and worked on a co-operatively run small holding for a couple of years. I did Uni later in life; it was crap - do Uni before you're old and cynical enough to notice that degrees are piddle.

Before Uni I'd been running entry level (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NVQ) NVQ courses for long term unemployed kiddies. I wasn't exactly impressed to find my very expensive 3 year Uni course was less meaty than the stuff I was doing with people with learning difficulties previously. But yes, I should have known better.
Post grad I think is worthwhile. Doing your own research is fun. If I had my time again I'd try and con my way onto a shorter post grad course. I think a lot of mature students find Degree level a bit light weight and floppy.

All I can say is you're at a major disadvantage in the USA in not being able to go out boozing at university. In the UK, everyone goes out and gets rat-arsed in the first week of uni, and that sees you right for the rest of the year
See, over where I go to school, we (read:most of us) drink constantly in smaller amounts during the week, and hammered on weekends. I'd think it's a "400 meter dash" to a "marathon" comparison.
'Course, there is the beginning of semester break. The only time I've been hammered by noon was after finishing the first semester of class. I swear, it's the only time!
All in all, Aerothorn, I'm not sure why you're worried about Uni being miserable in your first year. I only know one girl in Uni that is miserable, and it's because she doesn't study (effectively, she stares at her paper without retaining anything. Thus, she spends every waking moment 'studying' to make up for her lack of study skills). 'Cause of that, she doesn't have time to get out, visit people, do hobbies, or drink.
Don't worry and enjoy it. It's gonna be a blast.
(Unless of course you stay at home like the above mentioned girl and never go out or see people, or excercise, or never find time for a hobby or yourself.

I went to uni for an age. I started work in one field (pharmacology research) but decided I'd rather not stay in it long-term so I went back to uni to do a vocational degree and now work in that field.
My degrees are pretty specialised for the job(s), although my first one was like any UK degree - you can use it to get into specific jobs or just as a general "degree". But I certainly don't think you need a degree unless you are going for something very specialised. A friend of mine did a Pharmaocology BSc and a Neuroscience MSc and is now some bioinformatics web guy - he was a hobbist web programmer/designer back in the late 90s and just built on it. He applied for a job and quit his PhD (in Neuro-oncology) just before it started to be the computer geek he always wanted to be.
And uni was a gas, every time.

I got done with high school in spring of 2005, and decided to work for a year because I ended up not saving shit for college, and now I'm going to a 2 year school for an AAS in Computer Programming (just got done with first semester). After I get done, going to get a bachelor's degree in computer science, not sure exactly what field I'm going to go into, just programming of some sort probably, and not sure where yet either.
I live at home with my parents.. so I have it really easy, just have to drive 30 miles to school/work in Sioux Falls 4-7 days/week.
