The box trick. (lolz) - by Variant

You know the Metal Gear Solid cardboard box trick? I just discovered you can do kind of the same thing in Deus Ex. You can't get inside a box of course but you can carry one around to hide behind. I just had the bright idea a bit ago in Paris... I wanted to sneak around this bot so I thought I'd try carrying a box with me and hide behind it whenever the bot turned, it worked awesomely... I even got in it's way slightly and it just walked around the box at the same time I was sneaking around the other side of the box. :p
Then I thought... lets see how far I can go with this, so after bypassing the bot there are these two guards protecting a door or something, so I start sneaking towards them with box in hand, they kind of spot me and say the typical "hey, a guy in a coat!" so I drop the box and hide behind it and they "forget" about me like normal... then I started pushing the box toward a guard and it's like the don't even know I'm there, once I get almost at one of the guards feet, slightly off to the side but still in their view, I start peeking around the box at the guards and they would be alerted and say stuff like "show some ID!" and then I would hide behind the box and they would forget I'm there... it was pretty hilarious, and is something I plan to investigate further.
It's almost as funny as "door skillz" where you can shut a door in their face and just keep closing it when they try to open it and make them forget about you and leave.

The box trick is actually one of my favourite and most-employed tactics in DX. Given the way the AI is in that game, I find it really useful at sneaking past bots, although I have to admit I'm yet to have as much success as you regarding actual human opponents. I also make use of the same tactic in Half-Life when evading automated turrets.

Stationary guards seem a lot easier to mess with than patrolling ones it seems, though it does work the same on mobile humanoids as it does with bots, you just can't toy with them as much. I kind of figured after my previous post that other people probably thought of this before, but it took me a bit to pick up on this tactic because I'd habitually smash every crate I came across until one time it just dawned on me to hide behind them.

"Say Bob, wasn't that box over there a few minutes ago?"
"Yeah, what about it?"
"Look! It's moving again!"
"Must be some pretty big rats..."
:D
