What a shame. I haven't seen Supremacy yet but the appartment fight in Identity is, imho, one of the best film fights ever. It's far more realistic, and to me therefore more exciting, urgent and outright terrifying, than most. It's what Tony Ja promised in the Ong Bak previews but never delivered. I was looking forward to the action in Supremacy. I'll see, but this talk of blur isn't inspiring.

Both The Bourne Identity and Grosse Pointe Blank make very strong arguments for carrying a disposable pen upon your person at all times. :D

You guys realise this argument is kinda like telling Monet his stuff's ok but he really needs to work on the details
You realize that you're comparing Paul Greengrass, a hack-job director who ruined a promising movie franchise by making two otherwise enjoyable movies nearly unwatchable, to Monet?

The pen scene from Grosse Pointe blank is the most ass-kicking fucking awesome death scene in the history of cinema.

The practical fighting style that Bourne and his counterparts use is intense enough as it is without the blur. I understand that the general purpose of the shaky camera is to put the viewer in the middle of the action, but it is completely unnecessary. Think of the scene in Private Ryan where Mellish (sp?) gets slowly stabbed in the chest by a German soldier. The situation itself was intense enough, that stylization would've fucked it up more than anything. I won't go so far as to say that they fucked up the fight scene in Ultimatum, but I'll definitely say that they could've done better with less.

True, and yet Saving Private Ryan is the only movie I can think of that features purely handheld filmed action sequences that are nearly perfect. In fact, if they had done anything other than that, the Omaha beach battle wouldn't have had a fraction of the impact. It's all about an expert undersanding of how to apply technique for maximum effect.

Now that we've (hopefully) gotten that out of our system...I keep hearing what a blast the movie is, unlike the last one, which I didn't hear much about at all. I never saw the last one. If I see Supremacy, will I be missing anything important, besides Franka?

I believe it was also filmed in 16mm, but I could be wrong. That gives it the grainy appearance. Proabably the best bit of the film, as later on it feels like Speilberg forgot that there were other countries involved in the invasion - it wasn't just America vs. Germany...
I actually caught most of the Bourne Identity on TV while visiting relatives in the US, and I have to say I was engaged until near the end. I think much of the interest came from the memory loss element, but whatever point that may have been made by the story wasn't coming through very clearly.
The CIA cover-up stuff was a bit dull in the end, plus the cheesy graphics when they were "waking up" the international operatives. The ending was predictable and slightly disappointing. I could probably leave it there with this film series of the Bourne X, but I may watch it again as the large number of lengthy ad breaks probably ruined the feel of the action. The ads go on for so long on American TV I get bored and go to make a cup of tea to pass the time.
Often with this sort of thing I prefer the James Bond slightly toungue-in-cheek angle.

If you don't see Supremacy you'll be missing some important stuff (imo). There are some references made in Ultimatum to characters/plots in Supremacy (as well as Identity). Also, Ultimatum picks up immediately, geographically as well as storywise, where Supremacy left off.
Serious Ultimatum spoiler here:
I was blown away at the end of Ultimatum, when Bourne makes the same statement that Clive Owen made to him in Identity ('Look what they make you give.'). Full circle & all that. Yet the ending of Ultimatum
does leave room for a Bourne 4. Imo.
Dang! I still have so many questions that I
know I'll end up going to see Ultimatum again. It was so fast-paced you almost have to. (This time I'm bringing a stick to bite on during the fight scenes. )
P.S. I
loved the pen scene in Grosse Point Blank. Actually, I loved everything about that movie.
