Watching someone on Twitch, they made it to the tower. Long story short, he got locked in, the guards left, he was not able to grab the key. He got locked in, and had to restart the mission. He couldn't get out.

I encountered a similar problem with this mission as the one RippedPhreak decribed and WEI semi-confirmed (
https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152438&p=2509243&viewfull=1#post2509243) here. Once I talked to Iarodo, the
door leading from a balcony to his area became locked, and an archer with the "old castle master key" should have entered Iarodo's quarters after a short time. But once when I played it, I did not find this archer once the commotion died down. Loading a quicksave into DromEd showed he was instead not even on the balcony before the locked door, but before the other door of this balcony, in a sitting room. It was hardly possible to lure him into Iarodo's quarters by banging the blackjack on the locked door, and after all the trouble, he even killed me right on the spot... When I loaded a save from right before I talked to Iarodo and did that again, I noticed no problem this time. On two other playthroughs, I never encountered this problem at all.
It could be advisable for the player to save the game just before talking to Iarodo, and only overwrite this savegame once the player has
obtained the old castle master key. Otherwise, the player might become imprisoned in Iarodo's quarters, breaking the mission. If there's an update to TBP some time, maybe there should be
another copy of the old castle master key somewhere in Iarodo's quarters. After all, why should the big boss of the whole mage compound not even have a key for his own quarters?Yeah in my case even though I was locked in I didn't really pay attention and decided to stay a while to search for loot and other interesting stuff, didn't touch any of the guards and none saw me, when I finally started to wonder how I'll get out I was near the exit and saw three dudes entering (at least I think they were three, it's been a while so I could be wrong), one of them had the key so I just thought «perfect timing !». I wasn't sure if it was a bug, but yeah it looked like these dudes took their sweet time getting there, to me either they were stucked somewhere as it can happen sometimes in Thief, or I just had to be near the door to trigger them into entering ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I
I let loose the monster locked in the lab on a ton of guards and the douchebag head mage who wouldn't talk to me. He killed like 7 NPCs, then out in the garden the guard with a metal helmet finally killed himAwesome xD
I had an itch to try that, wondering if it was even possible, but ended up being distracted by something else.
Love this mission too, it was so satisfying. I had such a great time with this campaign that each time I ended a mission I was wondering how the next one could measure up, but I really wasn't prepared for this one, completly blew my mind.

I finished the mission but I still haven't been able to get to the locked door near the beginning where there are tomatoes all over the wall and two people talking. Can someone help me? I've been trying for a while now..

You need to do a bit more exploring, you can't get in from the outside. You end up unlocking it from the inside.

I found out how to open that door with the splashed tomatoes and the two dudes standing there.
There is one more castle in this mission. I managed to get to the other castle by jumping from the Mages castle's rooftop. Go to the rooftop and look around.

In the basement lab there is a lever that opens a door into the wine cellar. Is there a way to open that panel from the other side?

Just finished this impressive mission! Loved the city atmosphere with the parties and dancing, juggling, fire breathing, etc, good stuff that! For the mission proper I was suspicious at first, so I didn't explore around much, but rather I used some rope arrows and made my up to the top quite quickly. Wow, nice twist! Then I could take my time and LOOT everything! I really enjoyed the different themed sections for the mages, all the decorations, paintings, tapestries, stained glass windows, tile work, paneling, seating nooks, and on and on. It was a joy and a pleasure to explore it all and feel like I was in a real place! Impressive views from the ramparts and turrets too, love that that's possible now. That one deep enemy though, tough stuff! I fired him up with two mines, two fire arrows, and lots of sword hits, and he still wouldn't go down! So I just ended up tossing the KOed boss mage in there with him and locked the doors, LOL! Played about 3 hours, found most of the loot (300 short, not bad), fun mission!

I'll show it in the next video. It's rather naughty :nono:
