I got into the archmage's quarters, had the conversation, his guards burst in and looked for me. They are all sleeping now, but the door I came in by is now locked. I believe one of the guards was supposed to have a key on him, but I'm not seeing it.

Edit: I started the mission over and this time the second crossbowman with the key was there. Weird that he didn't appear the first time.

You might be referring to mission 10. I also have that key and can't find where to go.

Yeah I found two master keys : one is on one of the guards coming to get you and another is on the table were the mages were feasting (don't know if the key on the table was there from the beginning or if it only appear after you are chased). For me I only encountered the guard with the key after spending some time searching for loot, so may be he doesn't appear right away (or may be he was just stuck somewhere behind the door when you were searching for the key).

This mission left me wondering if there isn't some hidden way to talk to the Archmage face to face, or if we can encounter his real self later on. I found a mage that seemed to me it could have been him and I locked him up were the artifact was for some sweet revenge, just hoping I got the right guy (though I doubt it) hehe

Ah.... I was wondering where that guy came from, all of a sudden. Well, I knocked him out, like everyone, so, that's that. :)

I really wasn't sure, but when I heard his voice I felt I had to knock hime down and lock him up just in case.
