What's missing? It's meant to be pitch black.

Textures look like they are missing. It looks bad without them. Don't know about your gaming experiences, but normally pitch black/zero black areas in games, including in Thief, are indicative of missing textures... 100% of the time in every other case in my experience.
That's why I asked about it. I wasn't a dev on the mod, so how am I supposed to know these zero blacks were intentional. The rest of the game has seemed fine until this point. No similar area where black textures stand out like a sore thumb

It's just for atmosphere. There shouldn't be anywhere so poorly lit you can't navigate, it's very well done in that regard.

Whatever else may be the case, it's a great post-username combo.

Hello,
I'm finally able to play TBP for the first time, had reached mission 4 in the spring of last year and had to take a long break from then on. Started back in january this year and now I'm in mission 8. I'm not very long into the "abyss" and have encountered a strange situation with the "guard/ghost"(?) with his "smoking head" (see picture below). He sort of walks a few steps, then stops as if being locked in time or in a sort of freeze out. Then walks again a few steps. Has detected me as an enemy and goes into alert mode and tries to attack me with the same phenomenon: comes at me a few inches, then stops again as if being petrified or paralysed. Is this intended to happen or am I witnessing a bug/error? Also have to mention that the mission crashed for the first time directly back to windows desktop while standing at the abyss looking over to Teidir's tomb at the very beginning after entering the "jaw of darkness". That was the second game crash during the whole playthrough so far, the other one happened in one of the earlier missions (can't remember which one), but otherwise the game runs perfectly so far. Anyway, here is the image of the scene:

Never mind, have watched a bit of Klatremus' video of the mission. I see. I was being impatient and overly anxious about encountering some bug that could spoil the experience. Very interesting and good idea with those guys! :cheeky:

The "frozen-while-you-look-at-them" - thing is a feature not a bug :D .
Once you have been detect you could for example walk backwards and keep them in your eyes. Better not alarm them.

This mission really managed to give me an 'eek' moment, though this specific one was surely not planned by the devs.
I just shot a rope arrow into a dark hole in the ceiling, hoping to find a secret. Instead, a dead spider dropped onto my face instantly. I'm done for today. (:
