Agreed, Darkwood is a great game that is highly underrated. I can't recommend that game enough. Between Darkwood, Resident Evil 7, Prey, and The Evil Within 2 I feel like 2017 was an excellent year for horror games.
I guess I'm really late here, but I want to say this: 2017 was an excellent year for horror in general. Especially of the executive kind you get when you turn on the news.
I also guess I missed out on mentioning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, which is well worth anyone's time if they want to live out a slice of a deeply personal nightmare. It classifies as horror, but not as we traditionally know it, and for that alone it's a singular achievement. The gameplay isn't so hot, but putting that aside, its steady unfurling of Senua's trials made me feel as ragged and lost and bereft as she did during its last act, with an emotionally honest ending that's both an absolution and a reminder of the difficulties most of us are blessed not to have in our lives.

Nioh: Complete Edition[...]
The biggest difference is the combat, which is fast and insanely slick. Besides specialising in weapons and their attendant unlockable combos (of which there are a metric shit ton)
[...]
There's a bunch of other things that round it out, like the sheer quantity of loot drops that turns it into Diablo, the weapon/armor crafting and upgrading systems
Combos and Diablo-esque wading through loot? You're doing a fine job at talking me out of playing Nioh here, Sulphur! I love Souls-esque combat, but learning combos and getting timings right and whatnot? Ehhhhhh, no.
Ruiner and West of Loathing sound pretty good though. I think I'll take Nioh of my "Still to play" list and replace it with those.

Heh, I'm afraid so. You get an up to 500-item inventory pool that's divided amongst your five armour slots, two weapon slots, two ranged item slots, and two accessory slots, not to mention your usable items and skills that go into the d-pad quick-use slots. It would quickly get ridiculous if you didn't have options to sort all of it in terms of level/newness/rarity per slot or all together, so it's not a complete pain in the ass, but yeah, it's not exactly fun.
Don't let the combos turn you off though - it's not Bayonetta. No button mashing, they're fairly easy to pull off and some of them offer good tactical uses, like, well, parrying. Some of them basically let you instantly switch to a high stance-strong attack if you're on a lower stance, for example. It's pretty useful stuff.
The Ki pulse mechanic's the best thing ever though: I get why you may not like the sound of that, and it's (kinda) optional, but if you can get used to it, the way it threads through each encounter makes the combat come alive. I keep coming back to the game just for the tactile feel of its combat, if you can believe that. This isn't the ponderous and considered combat of DS1/2 - it's faster, and I'd say closer to Bloodborne if we're rooting around the Miyazakiverse.

Ah, don't worry about it. I've been dragging my feet on getting to Nioh because I think I'm kinda done with Souls-likes anyway. Not much interest in The Surge either, and I haven't even bothered finishing DS3.

Zerker be sure to go play the SNES version of Lost Vikings 2. It's excellent.
