well said about liminal spaces robot, what is in them is just the lore growing as in creatures/etc,but the spaces themselves are the star of the show
the last level of the mines of maragroth series the museum was a perfect example of a liminal space and each of the painting would be different levels of the thief backrooms :P

I think we're on to something....

remember back when they had a colab of fm authors make a mission and splice it together, imagine if each fan mission author who was interested in a project of the backrooms/levels and each of them make one weird as they can level in the backrooms style and in the end they get put together weather by portal/stairs/lift/etc,if possible maybe someone can come up with a randomize thing for maps for new dark if not already out?
the story can take place directly after thief 3 as we have no idea how weird things are besides all glyph's now working, imagine how many more things would be different, maybe the woodsie_lord comes back, viktoria is stuck in a limbo type backrooms and we got to rescue her,you walking for hours on a level and all of a sudden you see a gold child down a hallways so long it only looks like a spot of gold in the distance :P so many weird things can be done, and since the backrooms style don't have a lot of assets seems like you could get a build pretty fast
waits for replys :)

not a bad idea Downwinder.. I was more thinking of Thief2.. since I was thinking about having Hammers and Mechanist in this too.. (like I said, the whole thing being the result of some mech experiment gone taffed)
but either way, it could work.. we come up with some objectives for each "layer" of the place, and have one person do that layer..
I think about 4 or 5 layers should work.. but we could add more if we get more ppl in on the project...

or each layer can be its own part so this way they can bypass having to send files and mess with code, just have part 1/2/3/etc in a series so they can come out quicker and i don't think order of levels matter?
maybe have a sticky thread so when each new level comes out people know where to go for any and all updates, also in this way, people can say try a level and be like ohh i like this idea more then i though and maybe want to do a level
but there has to be rules for making backrooms type levels
rules
#1 devoid of life
#2 level has to have the i'm not suppose to be here feeling
#3 expansive level/no small level
#4 levels don't have to be flat, they can have stairs/ramps/elevators/etc
#5 can have item's in a level but they don't fit in=things from the real world people left behind
#6 levels should be made in t1/g/2 as some might want a gritter pixel feel to level? i was going to say thief 2 newdark for the most advance feeling for a level but i am sure the fm authors would know way better then me
of course would need more rules ,but others can chime in on that as well
^just idea's for rules
a lot of what i say is just idea's,don't take it as i am some lead on this :P
i just would love to explore the backrooms in thief
i do feel though the first level should be some kind of place where you gain access to the backrooms, for some reason i think gort could make a very surrealistic level as his rotb series is very backrooms in some places,i also think cardia could make a amazing backrooms level maybe with art as a theme?

Rule 1 sounds okay.. but I'd loosen it a bit.. some of the "found footage" shows that there are.. "things" roaming the place.. in fact, a couple have ppl in hazmat suits so mechs in diving costumes could convey a similar vibe..
rule 2 is good too..we could also add over that a vibe of having this creepy feeling that you're being watched/followed...
also..some of the vids have kinds of graffiti on the walls..so there's some contention that others have been there before...
all the same though, I think we're on to something.. a rather unique situation to put Garret in... nothing like the Maw or Soulforge.. heh

the movie langoliers by Stephen king has a part where they kinda slipped in to a backrooms type world "it happand when they were on a airplane,at the airport was the surreal part, and when they came back to normal time ,that one kid says "look the new people" was a deep feeling
no scampering
i don't like the idea of adding life,i would rather find messages on paper/audio tape maybe even some video camera type thing, writing on walls, items left behind or even dead bodys but the odds of finding life is pretty rare and the machine life could work but i think a hide and seek game is not what anyone wants in a backrooms level
Eiji on 19/5/2022 at 01:00
well..we should put things in that can add to the "creep" factor... finding some bones with a Keeper medallion would be a good one..
perhaps some audio logs by mechanists... diaries to..
as for the Langoliers.. I've seen that movie... yeah.. in that they seemed to be sort of existing "out of time".. or more like out of phase of time...
and it turns out.. the backrooms seem to be like that too.. you don't feel hungry or tired, and have almost no sense of time at all..
downwinder on 19/5/2022 at 02:13
^ sounds great, cause the chances of finding something living in the backrooms would be very low odds, unless they had the "almond water" :P
another fan mission that has that feeling is "lost in the far edges" the first part of mission at least the city part loved how it felt

One thing I forgot to mention...we could take a page out of "Half Life/Black Mesa".. in that, you always are hearing some of the sounds of the various aliens (mawmen, headcrabs, etc)..something like that could also add to the "creep" factor..especially if you can hear them but not find them... like I said..you might have this suspicion that you're being watched or followed, but you cant tell..
