Focus is Super Frob.
It's not just Super Frob...it has different uses...that's what I meant before when I said it's a rechargable,
multi-application, super-ablility...We just have to wait and see how impactful it will be.

Hmm. Good point. I stand semi corrected. Semi cuz it still doesn't sound as important as cover in HR.
...though none of you should ever see it, because a real professional thief wouldn't get in a fight in the first place.
I wish you weren't being sarcastic. Never seeing it is exactly what I want. If it's there, I never want to notice it, ever, or see the game setting up a scenario for it, even though it can be circumvented in other ways.
I don't want to walk into a gamespace and see it structured with Focus and 3rd-Person in mind, regardless of how the obstacles can be dealt with in other ways.

Yeah, that would be poor. But it doesn't have to be that way.
It sounds to pretty obvious to me - Focus will allow the following:
* Time slowing for easier lock-picking and black-jacking.
* Time slowing when picking locks so you have more time/don't panic so much. Of course this could also be used to stop you from picking a lock without being seen, because there may be no time. So you'd have to use Focus or go find the key/another way in.
* Object highlighting at distance/through other objects: loot, items, switches, secrets
* Time slowing/activating "Fight" mode for when you are caught.
* Grapple point highlighting
There may be other things but that's the long and short of it and there is no reason that any of these should affect "core" gamplay.

I was kinda half and half on that. The delivery was sarcastic, but the meaning was true. As in it doesn't matter you can punch a dude in the kidneys using the focus ability, because you'll likely never find yourself in a situation where you'll need to use it. And even if you do, you'll find other ways to get out of a sticky situation that doesn't involve combat.

Focus is still up in the air, but the game being built for 3rd person won't be an issue. If it's like DX:HR, you'll be spending a good 85% of the time in 1st person, only switching to 3rd to give you more view when you're saddled up against a wall.
...or climbing a damn ladder and/or rope arrow. I really hope they remove that "feature" for New Thief. It was the one thing I hated the most about switching to 3rd person in DX. I can understand the switch for when you're taking cover or up against a wall, but for ladders it was just straight up pointless.

God help me, I'm agreeing with Vae.
The feature, optional or not, flies in the face of all Thief should stand for. Particularly the combat applications. With its violent flourishes punctuated by the snapping of bones and mangling of flesh (and inspired by utter tripe like Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films).
Even if Focus stays, it cannot be used in combat. If you're keeping the original melee system in place - as they've alleged - then focus is a flashy superfluity, at best.
SubJeff on 29/3/2013 at 13:05
Well I'd dispute your assertion that the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films are "utter tripe", but then I've had the misfortune to witness your ravings on digital videofilm which is quite informative as regards your inconsequentially opinions.
Regardless, and assuming you are (for the sake of argument) perfectly correct, I still fail to see a correlation, causation or link of any sort, in this case or any other, that would suggest that the value of an element of art is, per se, related to the overall quality of the piece.
For example; your youtube ranting is a waste of oxygen, but I'd never dispute the wonder and utility of the oxygen that drives the drivel. After all, even fools occasionally appreciate fine food and their foolishness is unrelated to the fineness of that food.
I suppose what I'm saying is that regardless of your opinion of the Sherlock Holmes films (which I suspect confused you) I'm surprised that the calculated slow motion combat sequences could raise such bile. They were well shot, dramatic, and rather unique at the time - something to be admired in a post-Matrix era of lackluster melee sequences, no?
That isn't to say I'll be using this feature in game however; this above is just a set of observations/musings. If you understand what I'm saying you may well therefore come to the correct conclusion that agreeing with Vae has only occurred because your brain failed for an instant. However ridiculous you are (and honestly, I don't really mind the Sisters of Mercy look, even if it is a bit blasé these days) I didn't think you were outright stupid.

Apparently the Focus ability is part of the story, which could impact how easy it is to ignore.
thiefessa on 29/3/2013 at 13:54
Sounds like its acquired fairly early in the plot, but it remains the players choice to use it or not.
Good news as far as I'm concerned.
