Concerning the "odd shift key behaviour":
I was wondering too why I moved so seemingly fast while holding down 'shift' but in the manual of the game an "easy move" feature is mentioned.
That means you walk and turn in steps instead of a fluid motion. Perhaps it is build in for those who have never played a 3D-game like this or it was meant as an alternate control method similar to older dungeon RPGs.

Well, upgraded DOSBox and fiddled around with the settings and the physics are back to normal, although the shift key still causes me to teleport forward.
On the other hand, now the music is broken and the framerate is noticeably low. Bleh.

DoxBox works, but it is glitchy, and might be a bit complicated to get working.
Try Connectrix Virtual PC. I have Windows 95 installed on that (and Windows 3.11). It is like playing on the proper operating system itself! :D

I want to play UUW, but I don't want to play it badly enough to spend $150 on it.
I figure that if I wait until I next upgrade Durandal around next fall it should have enough power to run UUW playably.

Follow-up:
OpenGL rendering mode in Dosbox is, for some unknown reason, impossibly slow.
I tried changing it to 'surface' (presumably this is software-only use of SDL_Surfaces?) and suddenly it's playable.
So. Yey!
