I thought it was mostly the Irish who hated old Oli. Them and Catholics I guess.
At any rate he was bookended (apart from his boy) by Charlie 1 & 2 so I don't know if "considerbly worse" really does the trick (although Chuck 2 was much more fun and had other things to worry about. Rulers ought to wish for big disasters to fix up. Distract people from their policies)

England is not a democracy and until it is the country is politically backward and has nothing to say to me.
Dude the queen isn't sat in her War Room surrounded by generals plotting the next invasion of Ireland. She's just a figurehead, and one that's done nothing to you or your loved ones.

It took me a lot of plug checking to figure out the audio is shot on that link. A shame as I'm interested in why exactly the English figure control of ones own country is a trivial thing. I remember a drunken argument in Banbury with a fellow who was insulted I didn't understand it but I didn't give a damn as it stopped him from hitting his wife and the bobbies were threatening to take him in and I figured I was doing him a favor and they got pissed I asked why they had no guns to be all threatening when it looked like I could kick thier asses so this drunk ass was not going to back off and thier sticks were puny and amusing and they then concentrated on me until he started in on his wife again and I was secretly glad I didn't have to get a knot on my head afterall.
Ohgodammitfuck it's some new audio problem with youtube. Nevermind. Not your link.

She's just a figurehead
The most eloquent defense for the monarch -- she's effectively useless so we should all embrace her.

I wasn't defending the institution of monarchy at that point, I was commenting on a rarrgh-venom attack on her specifically.
Anyway my more general thinking is, it's hard to pin down a specific use for her. But I wonder what other cultural reference points we have these days. (what is britain about? what is our culture?) I kind of like having a figurehead for some Good Values (if we can put our heads together and decide what those are).
Suppose we could elect them but if this is a figurehead and not a leader with actual power, is that necessarily preferable. Or do we just promote our favourite celebrity in a yearly rotation maybe. Then we can have King Patrick and bring the thread full circle. :D
