...That's it? The iPad. - by Fafhrd

Thinking about this more over the past couple days, do you know what the iPad reveal reminds me the most of? The Segway reveal.
Both of them had months of hype before hand, rumours of imminent world-changingness to come (oddly enough, some of that hype was generated by Steve Jobs). And then they were revealed and everybody pretty much just goes 'Buh?' The only difference is that when people said 'what the fuck?' to Dean Kamen he basically said 'yeah, it was overhyped.' Jobs seems to think the iPad is 'magical.'

You could say that about the iPod and arguably the iPhone, but their computers and laptops are pretty damn solid. Or at least the OS is.
It's got me really deeply truly considering a hackintosh. I've been looking at Macs for awhile, but I just can't stomach the fact that I could build the exact same computer for almost half the price. With a hackintosh, I get the best of both worlds. Hell, I could even open it up without voiding the warranty.
OSX is fine but not that much better then windows7, macs are nice because of the computer itself, keyboard, screen, trackpad, that sort of stuff. Slap windows on it if you want the best of two worlds, I am too used to OSX but would do so otherwise.

Tell me again about how PCs are cheaper and better.
It's a bit difficult to comment on that without knowing which type and number of applications the PCs and MACs were being used for. I could imagine a flaky application on either platform sucking up support time.

I can't believe I've seen several people refer to the ipad price as being
low. Yeah, for a car maybe. You guys have way too much disposable income.
THANK YOU.
The usefulness to price ratio is nowhere near good enough for me.

It's not just that. I've used OSX quite a bit (and tweaked Ubuntu to act like it) , and I've come to prefer the flow and layout of it a little better than Windows 7. Like Quicksilver and Expose. Sure, Launchy and Switcher are alright, but they're occasionally flaky and aren't as well integrated into the OS.
All said, there isn't a night and day difference between OSX and W7, but there are alot of little features that make me prefer OSX just a little more. It's more of a cohesive whole, I guess. If I can grab a copy for $30 and slap it on a $700 PC that actually has better hardware than a $2000 Mac Pro...well, Apple Style aside, I don't see any reason not to.

It reminds me more of the iPhone v1 launch, which I'm sure I remember had (
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/26/first-apple-iphone-reviews-trickle-out/) much the same tentative reaction as has the iPad's, and look how that turned out.

I felt sorry for Mr. Jobs. You could tell that he knew, the audience knew, that something wasn't quite right. Did this seem right, a poor, sick, old man?
It reminded me somewhat of Tolstoy's description of Napoleon, suddenly finding at the Battle of Borodino that his usual strategy wasnt working anymore, that he had become weak and "mortal".
An intense mothering desire for the man came over me about twenty minutes in. His usual uniform seemed to make him look at this keynote like an awkward teenager who couldn't afford to buy well fitting clothes. One thought about how to change it up a bit. Black shoes - a good pair of Oxfords. A better fitting pair of jeans, with a proper (leather) black belt. The poloneck should be lengthened slightly so I didn't have to spend so much time looking at his ill fitting crotch-piece. Why, Steve, why?
I realized the benefit in all this. For the first time in nearly 5 years, the Apple thrall had been broken the world over. They are no longer the unstoppable juggernaut of "hip". Just a fallible capitalist corporation that we can ignore like the rest of them. A sense of relief, of what the Germans call "Erleichterung", flooded rooms all over the planet like Sun Ra. Yes. Freedom. Freedom to live. Freedom to love. Freedom to create, to imagine a new future. Roosevelt's hidden speech can be spoken aloud? Scales fall from eyes. Mass hysteria fades, Neue Sachlichkeit dominates.
We can imagine futures, perhaps, where we don't sit in front of screens all day. In the past, we sat at typewriters or at desks sorting files and having meatings with real people. We came home to enjoy relaxing in front of the screen, our novelty and connection to the wider world.
Life up to now has been sold as Utopia.
Utopian work means-
Twitter, Facebook, iPhone, Office, Facebook, Guardian/NYTimes, pr0n, lunch, Office, Websites.
Utopian home life means-
Twitter, Facebook, iPhone, Hulu, Facebook, Guardian/NYTimes, pr0n, dinner, Netflix, Websites.
Let it go. Just let it go...
Bye Bye!

The latest macbook is a macbook pro really, it has all the features like the trackpad options (once you are used to using them you will never want anything else), no integrated graphics but a beefy 3-d card that runs Crysis just fine, and it's only 1000 in dollars. Been having it for a few weeks and I am more then a little but pleased with it, much much better then the latest. The new trackpad is soooooooooooooo good.
edit: one downside, the backside is too smooth, which is bad in combination with gravity. They should have put some rubber there, that is bad design. But I couldn't be happier regardless.
2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed
1066MHz frontside bus
2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM
Going to last me for a while, not the hottest, but it works better. Had a windows machine with much better specs but it was still like drowning in a bucket with molasses. Will do fine for a year or 2.
