I can't believe I've seen several people refer to the ipad price as being
low. Yeah, for a car maybe. You guys have way too much disposable income.
Whereas I can't believe people are questioning the utility of an Apple product as if utility was a major feature of any Apple product.
Because face it, anyone who buys Apple iAnything is a fashion victim. There is literally nothing that Apple do that cannot be gotten cheaper and better from someone else.

True to a certain extend, it's mostly a
brand for people with purple pants and odd glasses and spiky hair, but they just make great laptops, the keyboard and trackpad just feel right and there are no loading times and they come with a solid battery. It's total bull that OSX never crashes, but in the end it is more reliable by far, and I just like the way they look (well the normal macbook that is, I hate that metallic look of the pro), and when you look at it from a price-tag point of view, you get more done in less time, so it's a sound investment for me. Windows7 is marvelous, but it going to be updated/patched at some point, and it will be like drowning in a bucket of molasses once again, try opening Vista in safe mode it is really fast and perfectly stable just like Windows7 is now.

re: utility, the iphone etc fulfil established purposes and do so pretty well, even if others do it too. But I'm more at a loss as to what the ipad is really for. I guess it could be fun for using while you lounge in bed or something but "proper computer" and "pocket device" are higher on the priority list and once those are acquired it's hard to justify further cash on a device like this.
[edit]could be useful for people who's use of a PC extends to "surf web, read emails", but I'd still balk at spending that much just for those tasks

As other posters have said, its all about the brand and the image.
Heck, in college one of the rabid apples fans that I worked on a project with even bragged that the whole point of Apple was snob appeal.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I want to have SEX with this device.
I keep having wet dreams of laying in bed, surfing TTLG, chatting on AIM, and reading a book. And maybe watching some Hulu before drifting off into Apple silhouette commercial dreams.

Kinda guilty there but I just like stuff that is well designed, Apple products are just slick and I like slick design.

So, this is a 500$ paperweight that seems to be made for web browsing...
That doesn't support Flash.
Are we living in 1999? Of course not. It's a deliberate design decision. As usual, you're buying crippleware, crippled for the sake of providing Apple with absolute control over their market.
And people bitch about Micro$oft...

It will sell in millions but the smart money will wait until version 2 or even 3. I would have like to see a slide out keyboard, a camera, a proper OS.
A question, does it have mobile phone capability? Not VOIP but Orange or AT&T
It is of course extremely shiny :cheeky:

Wrong. It's the result of Apple and Adobe not being able to hammer out an agreement to create a version of Flash that would work on the iPad.

I cast my mind back to a previous job that I had doing desktop support at a company that had about a 50/50 ratio of Macs to PCs. There were two of us (me and one other guy) supporting Macs, and we each had time left over in our 8 hour day to do some PC support and get in an hour or so of web surfing. Meanwhile, there were
12 dedicated techs doing nothing but PC support, and they were putting in overtime hours to keep up with the work. Tell me again about how PCs are cheaper and better.

You could say that about the iPod and arguably the iPhone, but their computers and laptops are pretty damn solid. Or at least the OS is.
It's got me really deeply truly considering a hackintosh. I've been looking at Macs for awhile, but I just can't stomach the fact that I could build the exact same computer for almost half the price. With a hackintosh, I get the best of both worlds. Hell, I could even open it up without voiding the warranty.
