I'm curious as to why people keep saying the iPhone/iPod Touch has no multitasking. I can listen to music while browsing the web or scribbling notes on my Touch without a problem... (Of course if you open games... music closes, well d'uh )
But otherwise, I'm confused.

The iPod application runs in the background on the phone/touch/pad, it's different from multitasking.
When you close the iPod application the application closes, but the service is still running.

Can I quickly coin the phrase 'coffee-table computer.'
Yeah, you could use it as a coaster if needed.

I've been waiting for a decent web tablet for like forever and the iPad comes so close. If it supported multitasking and HD flash video, I'd be buying it for sure.
For lazy web surfing while laying on the couch or in bed, or reading, or watching Hulu, this form factor is better than a netbook. The problem with netbooks is that they're almost as big as an ultraportable laptop, but have low res screens and don't offer nearly the capabilities. I've held off on buying one so far, but I'm itching for something more convenient than my 6lb 14" work laptop with its 2hr battery life.
Now that the iPad is out and it's too underpowered for video, I think I'm going to look into 11.6" ultraportables.

:( After reading up some more on it, I think I'll wait for the 2nd generation to come out. This first one if for apple-freaks only. But not enough capabilities by far for me to justify the purchase.

While I stick by my initial underwhelming impression, I do think that on the whole we're underestimating the potential the iPad has once some people start developing dedicated apps. The wall-to-wall touch screen is the iPad's winning feature, and I'm guessing that some incredible things will come out of that. It won't fill an existing void any of us have but I'm guessing that any time spent screwing around with a decent app on this thing would inspire serious gear lust.
Having said that, the price is a little high for a touch screen toy.
