That new bow... - by Hewer

Well in the Thief world they have elemental crystal so you know...
Not this Thief world I bet. Removing the magic crystals is the only reason I can think of for replacing water arrows with "dry ice arrows".

I came across a now-redacted interview with the guy who wrote the texts for object and equipment descriptions for T4. He was dissing the old moss arrows, kinda sounding like he was glad not to have to explain 'em. I can't remember what site had the article, and no search for his name and moss or earth arrows yielded anything. The company manager had a couple of tweets he later deleted about the mandated third project. I'm kicking myself for not saving the pages.

What history?
Thief isn't set in this world.
Captain Obvious strikes again! FFS, I was first talking about
ingame history, meaning that a plain modern thing to the player is something that he cannot locate within the
ingame history so easily (opposed to e.g. Karras' robots which didn't look like anything familiar) because he already knows where its proper place is. And second I was referring to the historical aesthetics (as well as Steampunk) and, like it or not, most of the stuff you see in these new screenshots is based on historical references, meaning that also Garrett's bow would look less out of place if it both adhered to this aesthetics AND avoided being a replica of a clearly different universe, that is: ours. The first condition is roughly fulfilled, but the second is problematic IMHO.
Come on, it wasn't so complicated to just read my post carefully, was it?

It's a new aesthetic for sure. Along with Mr G's new mittens.
I suppose I can get with the idea that Mr G. spends his spare evenings obsessively crafting a bespoke burglary suit + the other ingenious tools of his trade which, if I'm being generous, is I think what they're trying to get at. But it's all a bit batman. A bit, well, anal. And it makes me wonder if the creative minds aren't a bit anal and batman too.
I like to think that someone as sage and worldly as Mr G. would eschew embrace simplicity and efficiency. Part of his character, for me at any rate, was that he wasn't a Mechanist, or a Pagan or Keeper or whatever other noble thing. He was a parasite - a taker of things - one amongst a society of other parasites - but Garrett at least earned maybe a bit of admiration from the player for his personal skill and derring do. Now he's a guy with a batsuit.
Eidos Montreal have some specific ideas that kinda don't fit the narrative that I imagined. Ho hum.

But the in-game history isn't analogous to ours so we don't know what exists. All we've seen is one city really.

My brain is analogous to ours though. Hence some possible dissonance.

You know what, there are a lot of things I'll discuss but this isn't one of them. Yes the bow is a bit of a departure from previous tech we've seen in the games, but then the new Garrett's outfit is, as ZB pointed out, highly over-worked. This too is very different from anything seen in the previous games. They've taken a different art direction and the new bow is part of that. It doesn't alter how it works in game though and really... I just don't care that much. Its not a laser gun so; so what?

To be honest though, anything smaller and nimbler is improvement for Garrett, I've always wondered how Garrett was so great at sneaking while carrying a broadsword and a bow. The third Thief gave him a dagger, which is a much better weapon for a thief.

We'll see.

It's not a question of departure. Nor a question of what can and can't be in a fictitious setting. It's a question of whether or not it's smart art-direction. Whether it's going to press the right buttons in the right way and lever the desired response from your audience.

If the game is good in every other way and the damn bow or eyeshadow are the only things people moan about they need to sort their priorities and lives out.
Who cares what it looks like really? ffs
