That new bow... - by Hewer

I'm seeing people here and there commenting that they don't like the bow Garrett has in the new concept art we're seeing.
I rather like it.
It looks nicely steampunk-ish to me, like something the Mechanists would make (I know it's not established yet that there ARE Mechanists in this reboot or whatever), and that Garrett would make sure to acquire.
I like it especially if there's a story to how Garrett gets it, which seems fairly likely to me.
I know it's not mechanically sound and in reality would be a mess, but it's well within my suspension of disbelief.

What if I told you that the bow was actually built IRL by a couple of blacksmiths, and it's fully functional?

I've though he should have a smaller or collapsible bow or cross bow forever. I'm not bothered about it being mechanically sound in real life because come on - rope arrows; how mechanically sound are they?
EM have actually made a working replica though so perhaps its not mechanically unsound anyway.

I did notice the brief bit at the beginning of this clip: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpRsOQ4MS_8) that's been linked a few times in the forums here.
I assume it's a proof of concept one off prop that's only functional in that the limbs retract, but doesn't really work as an actual weapon.
Is there more out there about it that I've missed?

Everything about the new Garrett has a Liefeld-grade overdesigned look to it. There's hardly a square inch of him that isn't covered with snaps and straps and flaps and hooks and stitching. The steampunkLOL bow is just an extension of that.

Nah man, he just finally found the bow upgrade.

It's overdone. It's not simple. Garrett's tools have always been simple and adequate and he's still very powerful without ever using any of it. Instead of being the most powerful person in the room by just melting into the shadows, eavesdropping and observing people, things, and the sounds around him, these seem to have given way to power in gadgetry.
All over the entertainment industry, complexity is cool. Everything is a Transformer. Retractable, collapsible... Since they went with Garrett, and not some guy who has no special perception, no Keeper training to channel those exceptional qualities, then what I see makes little sense with what had been established, so the canon isn't relevant, really, but it's the reference point we have for now. I'm wondering how muchof the original elegant and efficient conceptualizing may have been carried over.
Since the bow isn't some dark shade, I hope it affects visibility when drawn, and relatively per piece of equipment.
Since they had a guy make a physical model, I expect to see a "hero" version toured around in a display case like the resin Jensen's Arm model EM had made for DX:HR.

I see your point, and in general I agree. I still like the bow because it is still just a bow (as far as we know at this point, anyway), it's just easier to hide and carry. No missile launcher attachment or Will Smith Wild Wild West doohickery. It's a steampunk flamboyance- actually pretty tame for most steampunk stuff- that I think fits in well with the Thief aesthetic.
Like ZylonBane put, I agree that having everything tricked out and gadgety is too much (go, go, extendable blackjack, right?), but as long as I can play in 1st person and not have to look at all the snaps, straps and pockets (and God forbid the emo face they gave him), I'll be fine, I think.
I do hope we'll be able to play in the old-fashioned way, and won't be forced to use stuff like the "focus" whatever in order to keep the game going. The focus power or whatever it is seems like it could be fun to mess around with, but I don't think I'd want it as part of my play style. Like when FO3 started getting repetitive, I'd have some fun playing with VATS, but it was way too immersion breaking for regular game play.

Haha oh man. I hope they build that into the game, or at least reference it. I
do have some concerns about this game but if the first level turns out the be Garrett finding the bow upgrade I'll know the franchise is in safe hands.
