It's as if I'm blocked from making any audio adjustments.
I have a 5.1 speaker setup, audio channels are set to 12 (I can freely adjust those from 4 to 12), yet I can't get h/w accel to turn on. The letters are green, and when I click H/W accel they turn gold (like they're supposed to). But h/w accel doesn't move from off. Which also means I can't do anything with EAX (The EAX letters are all white). Oddly, I can still hear the game when I play it. It just doesn't sound as nice.
I have an SB-XFi soundcard.
On-board ATI sound is disabled.
WinXP.

That didn't help.
Oddly, on a few occasions the game cd wouldn't eject from the drive when I was done. This started happening at the same time I noticed problems with the sound functions in TG.
Bad disk perhaps?

I just burned all the TG files to a new disk and I still have the same problem. Again, the disk will not eject from the drive. Perhaps my drive is bad?
Also, even though I set the audio channels to 12, it reset (somehow) to eight.
Hmmmmm.....

I just un-installed and re-installed TG. Still the same problem. Perhaps it's a bad sound card?

Okay, well, I don't think it's a bad sound card or a bad drive. See, I just installed Thief2 and went to set the sound and everything is okay. Go figure.
I'm gonna try to install TG again. I'll let you know.

I just installed TG using the original disks. Still, the same problem. I'm open to suggestions guys.

Make sure that your X-fi is in Game mode. If it isn't, then EAX and H/W sound won't work in some games.

It is so I don't think that's the problem. I still have the same issues (can't turn on/off the h/w accel and I can't turn on EAX).

I now know the problem is not with my disks, my drive, or my soundcard. I installed TG using my "backup" copies on my wife's computer (she uses Vista, I use XP) and the same problem occured (can't turn h/w accel on and can't turn on EAX).
I believe the problem is with the XP updates which were installed on my computer. You see, I didn't have this problem until AFTER the updates were installed.
So what do I do?
Ideally, I'd like to fix this problem. I don't like playing my Thief game knowing it's damaged. But then again, the problem isn't THAT bad AND the game is still playable.
I'm gonna try to have my cake and eat it too. I'll still be playing the game and in-between plays I'll try your suggestions.
So for those of you who've been following my little novellette here, what's the next move to try to correct this problem?
