TG FM - Whispers Below the Cobblestone (2021-05-13) - Updated to v1.1 - by Korthak

The sewer hatch key is located in the undercity, the large caves below the city quarter. First, gain access to a very large "room" (or area) in the caves. Stairs, ramps and walkways connect various entrances and exits with the main room. To the north, there is some river-like large open canal present. The water moves down in a waterfall there.
More to the south in that large subterranean room, there is a place where two tiers are present. The lower one has a floor made of earth and stone, the upper one is more like a broad walkway made of wood. There are some gaps and holes in the not-so-well maintained walkway. Two of these large holes are to the sides of an iron gate that cannot be opened. A cart stands before this gate. On the levels below the gate, a guard post can be seen, although there might not be any guard present.
Go onto the upper level there and head south from the iron gate. You should reach a small passage leading south through the wall, and inside there, an ornate metal door can be found. Behind it, you enter a small reading room or library with weird paintings on the wall. Some devilish monsters are depicted on the paintings. Go through this room and leave it at the opposite end, to the south.
You will reach a corridor with several "fake passages" on the sides and doors on every end. But there is also a door along the way and to one side, which leads north into a room with a staircase going up. Go up as well to emerge in a small set of rooms with machinery, one or two opponents, and sleeping, working and living (?) rooms. Search the place for a bedroom that lies to the west. Once opening the door, you see a bookcase on the opposite wall, containing some red books (not readable), a vase (not readable either), and a scroll (readable, but cannot be picked up).
The scroll mentions the key, so it should not be very far. Indeed, once you look around the bed, you should see a metal box near the western wall, and you may guess three times what's inside.
This is valid for v1.0 and v1.1 of the mission, both on easiest difficulty level.
By the way, I also checked out the passage Tank_Abbott asked about some days ago. The player can indeed go back up the "one way passage" in one of the Lords' chimneys if he/she takes the two pieces of a broken statue from a nearby roof to the chimney and drops them down before descending. It is very difficult to stack the two pieces at the right spot in the chimney, but there is one where the player can then climb up. However, all this is very difficult, so I do not think that the author had this way back in mind when designing these locations.

So all I'm missing is
the painting. I've been going around in circles for an hour, but can't find any keys for these (

under the City

under the City When you enter the undercity go down the big stairwell all the way to the end, there's a ladder in the small room leading up.
When you enter the burrick tunnels go left all the way until you reach a round cavern, you can mantle upwards to some ruined mines which lead you to the hammer cathedral.

The last postings reminded me of this FM which I didn't DL in May because I was sure that the author would add a german version later (I wonder why not at the beginning).

https://www.ttlg.com/forums/images/smilies/teeth.gifVery nice design but I gave this one up after 2 hours wasting my time running in circles. Playing "Hard" I even couldn't fulfil the loot requirement, I only stole the pagan relict and the gem. IMHO too difficult. :erg:

had to stop because of recurring graphic problems / errors - usually it was whilst entering a new area (I think rooms in most cases), when all of a sudden the whole room turns into snow-white textures.
Had that problem, too, but remembered having the same mess in one of Beltzers's missions. Solved it again by re-editing the picture files which didn't have the usual dimensions like 512x256 or so. Don't know why other players don't see those strange white surfaces. But at the end that didn't help to find the required pic.

He did that with v1.1, just in case you missed that update.

I assume that only some graphics cards and/or drivers have that problem. I have no problems looking at the paintings which have textures outside of the usual (2^X)x(2^Y) range, on three rather different (hardware and OS) systems. (And neither do I see any weird textures near the grave of Mrs. Guldenberg or the area where you get the shaman hand, where others have reported texture problems.)
Since you did not find the required picture, I guess you did not reach Guldenberg's palace, did you? In there, you only have to
find a key to the treasure room, and then enter the room near the paintings with unusual dimensions. The room has a lock, a locked grate, and the picture you need can be seen from before the grate already. At least that's how it is in v1.1.
I agree, though, that even in v1.1, the player may get lost, especially in the places below the city. Some ways there are still easy to miss.

I've got a question concerning the portait painting in the Undercity pub (the one with blue background color): is that a secret safe/stash?
Because when viewed from pretty close up it seems to be comprised of two halves and I wonder if there is a hidden switch nearby?

DromEd shows nothing behind the picture, and no links or other measures of attaching anything technical to it. The picture is also defined as one object, not two. The line apparently separating the two halves of the picture is already present in the picture's texture.

Ho boy, that mission is now in my all time favourite folder.
What an absolute gem! Congrats, Korthak!
I finished - without any hints - with 4148 loot in just under 4 hours ... phew. It was a tiring journey but worth it. I got lost more times than I can count.
I loved the multi-tiered setup, with the city, mansion, undercity and pagan shrine.
I don't know why but TG missions have this completely different vibe than T2 ones...
And I like how there aren't a million guards every 2 feet. Just the right amount. I mean I blackjacked them all anyway, with all the backtracking and exploring I had to do, I would have gone mad, if I had tried to ghost it. Took me 4 hours having the place to myself, can't imagine how long I would have needed otherwise,
The spooky child laughter in the basement really got me. But also generally, the atmosphere was spot on. I enjoyed all the readables - and actually, I would have liked to see even more.
The exploration was so fun. It seems like everytime I came back to some place, I would discover another way to go that I over-looked before.
And then there were those times where I could see some place or hear someone -the mage comes to mind, and I had no idea how to get there.
So back into or onto the city to find my way over there.
Only negative point for me were the pitch black patches. It just made it too dark and a little bit annoying to search. But fortunately, AFAIK there is nothing hidden in any of those places.
I also saw these blue textures in Shrine area and Guldenberg manor; playing with ThiefFix 1.27. Playing with AngelLoader and texture packs off.

What an amazing mission this was! Thank you, Korthak! Thoroughly enjoyed my time through it. Got lost a bit more than usual, so the layout was a tad confusing at times. Also a bit bare and lack of detail here and there. But gameplay was stellar, non-linearity perfect. Loved the undercity and caves. Really wanted to know more about the people, so perhaps needed a few more readables. This was obviously inspired by Melan, Skacky etc, so I'm not complaining. ;)
Only 2 areas I couldn't get to:
- At Ravenhurst I climbed into a fireplace by stacking a few potions and got to a locked grate with a mossy cave behind. Can you get in there?
- SW of Ravenhurst there was an alchemist tower. Just outside up to the left I saw some large arched windows with wooden ceiling inside. It really looked like I could get in there but not sure how.
Thoughts?
