TG FM - Whispers Below the Cobblestone (2021-05-13) - Updated to v1.1 - by Korthak

Concerning the fireplace: My notes contain information only about one fireplace at Ravenhurst's, and that one leads to a place where you may sooner or later get to from the other side, after a bit of rooftop climbing. I did not write anything down about a locked grate, but my notes are not detailed about this route anyway. Thus, I'd recommend ignoring this passage for now. If you're an explorer type of player, you will most likely get to this spot later on.

Found it. There was a building between Ravenhurst and Guldenberg that I had found before but forgot to go back to search. It had a connection to both the places that I mentioned in my previous post. The grate there was unlocked from the north side.

Hello everyone,
new to the forum as a member, but have been an unregistered reader for years!
This mission looks really promising, especially considering that I can't get enough of "thieves highway / rooftop" and angelwatch-like scenarios. Have started the mission and played for a good while, but had to stop because of recurring graphic problems / errors - usually it was whilst entering a new area (I think rooms in most cases), when all of a sudden the whole room turns into snow-white textures. This stops when I move around for a bit, but in certain areas it happens again and again. Have to add that I played TG with TFix 1.27, but this was before the mission update to v1.1, so maybe the author has fixed the problem with his update by now? Or is it due to my pc, do I need a clean and fresh re-installation of TG or something like that? Help would be greatly appreciated as I was really looking forward to finishing and fully enjoying this mission. Excuse grammar or spelling errors since I'm no native English speaker ;-)
So long!
Hi everybody,
can anybody help with this? I'm looking forward to getting into Thief again, and this gem of a mission seems to be a good start. But with the graphic bugs / issues it's no fun ... I know a few people have replied to my problem some time ago already, but to be honest the answers weren't too helpful, still, appreciate the effort/help anyways! Maybe the guy who built this mission can help first-hand? Thanks in advance ...

You're probably not getting any answers because you fail to include basic information like your GPU (one or two?). What's your operating system? Is thief installed in program files and you're using win7 with UAC enabled or something? Are you using the built-in FMSel or something else to install the mission? Are you using any graphics mods? Have you modified
cam_ext.cfg? Ideally copy paste your
cam_ext.cfg into pastebin. Ideally delete your
THIEF.log, then play until you hit a white texture, quit and post
THIEF.log into pastebin.
Try adding
precache_d3d_textures or
precache_d3d_textures 2 in
cam_ext.cfg (in your root thief folder) using notepad or any text editor.
Try adding
d3d_disp_managed_textures into
cam_ext.cfg.

Hello,
thank you for your detailed answer! Was busy with other stuff, therefore I reply way too late ... anyway: GPU is GeForce RTX 2060 Super, it's this one: (
https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N206SGAMING-8GD#kf)
Operating system is Win10 Pro. Thief is not installed in Program Files folder, just in the (C : ) partition. Yes, I'm using the in-built FMSel and no graphics or other mods. As far as I can tell, the cam_ext.cfg has not been modified or changed. Can you tell me what the pastebin here is? Then I'll try to copy the cam_ext.cfg into it and try the THIEF.log-thing as well. The TFix version is 1.27 by the way ...
one more question: I fail to find my CD copy of ThiefGold, otherwise I would try a fresh installation for now ... can I delete my FM folder in the ThiefG directory? It also contains a folder called ".fmsel.cache" and the files "fmsel.bak" and "fmsel.ini". Can I delete this whole FM-folder and create a new one to reinstall the fan missions in the mission loader? Maybe that can help too?

Instead of deleting a folder, you can also rename it to, for example, "old FM dir", then create a new folder (with the same name the former one had before it was renamed by you) and only put in the absolutely necessary things, such as the "Whispers Below the Cobblestone" mission and its savegames. You should then be able to verify whether the problem still exists, or whether one of your actions has "cured" the game somehow. You can also rename the folder in which Thief is installed and then make another installation. If that one still has the problems you described, then it was not a damaged Thief installation.
Your graphics card should really be okay for the mission. I played it with a low-end card and still did not have problems like you described. Even attempts to "provoke" the bug did not succeed, the area with the relic had no visible problems at all. Memory usage also did not go up notably, so I still can't understand what is causing this texture problem you described.-scratches head-

-scratches head-Hi Bäuchlein :D (I'm from G as well ^^),
thanks for your reply! I think it's mostly unlikely that the GPU is causing this, since it was pretty "low-range-high-end" when I bought it in 2019, and it's never caused any graphic issues with other TG or T2 missions, even the technically demanding ones ... once I have found my TG CD copy, I'll try a fresh installation! In the meantime, can someone tell me what the dustbin here is? Then I'll do as
cowking has suggested and post the cfg and log here.
Or could this have something to do with the way I patched TG from the original installation to NewDark 1.27? I can't remember the exact way I did this (from which version to 1.27 and so forth), but I think it's unlikely too, because in other TG missions I haven't had these texture issues so far ...

I also do not think that the problems arise because of the way you patched your Thief installation. I rather think that some uncommon things coming together cause all this on your machine, but not on most others. I would still think of the graphics card and its drivers, but I doubt that the general specifications of the card are the problem. Just as with zappenduster's video card and some uncommon texture resolutions in v1.0 of the mission caused visual glitches for him, but not, for example, on my computer.
Currently, I have no new idea on how to proceed. Digging for the TG CDs, copying the current installation and FM folder, and then re-installing it and trying v1.1 of the mission again, or loading one of your old savegames - that sounds like the most promising idea so far.
It would, however, be interesting to know whether someone else having the same video card (and maybe even the same Windows version) would also suffer from the same problems - or not.

Hello Baeuchlein,
I'll keep you updated, once I've found enough time to check everything. I think you are on the right track though ... interestingly enough, there was never a problem with any other original or FM on my machine so far. In the meantime I ask again if someone can tell me what the pastebin on this forum is? Then I'll copy my cfg into it, maybe that will shed some light onto things. Thanks in advance!

The blue (missing) texture issue is related to using additional texture packs. For example the newer versions of ep2.crf will cause this issue. The old alpha version of ep2.crf will not. HD mod also has blue (missing) textures.
