Hi there!
So there's actually a messageboard for Ultima Underworld fans... gee, I wish I knew about this before... :-)
Anyway, I'm a 3d engine / editor programmer. Actually, Ultima Underworld was the main reason for me to get into programming in the first place. ;-) Right now I'm coding a 3d editor and I would like to use some of the Ultima Underworld 1 textures. Does anyone know where I can get these?
Thanks in advance!

I don't know if they're on the internet anywhere, but they're not too hard to extract yourself.
For Underworld 1 they're in the files:
Data/W16.tr - for 16x16 wall textures
Data/W64.tr - for 64x64 wall textures
Data/F16.tr - for 16x16 floor textures
Data/F32.tr - for 32x32 floor textures
For Underworld 2 it's easier and they're all in the file Data/t64.tr.
In both cases they are 8 bit palettetised format, so you need to extract the RGB triples from the file Data/pals.dat.
Easy! (I'm sure someone will give more helpful advise such as a program that extracts all the textures to .bmp format :) )

Hi,
Thanks for your answer, I didn't know about that. :D But anyway, I found out that the Peroxide viewer also enables you to extract the bitmaps. Saves them to 24 bit bmp files actually, which is what I need. However, the UU1 textures are 64x64x8bit. I think they're way cool, but I would like to have a higher resolution. Like 128x128x24bit or something. Maybe somebody out there has such textures?

Why don't you just edit the pics with Photoshop, or some other professional image editor?

Hi there,
Yeah, I could edit the pictures myself. But... I'm a programmer, not an artist. I don't think anyone would like to see how I screwed up those pictures... So if anyone has the UU1 textures in a better format, please do tell. :D

You wouldn't happen to be on the twister software crew would you?

Haha, nope, but I know about these guys. Actually, me and some other guy teamed up and we're creating a 3d engine, editor + other tools from scratch (we like that, we think it's fun ;) ). Eventually I would like to create an UU type game but I'm not planning the remake UU1. Well... maybe I'm going to design the orignal UU levels in my own editor, just for fun. That's why I'm interested in the UU textures. :)
Btw, if somebody is interested in programming 3d engines and stuff, visit our site at (

The only way you can update them is to edit them in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, or some other paint / image editor. The original textures were only 8-bit.
I have redone them for my Morrowind / Ultima Underworld Mod, and they are all now 256x256x24bit.

A big update is coming with even better texture work (Hopefully it will be up by tomorrow, depending on how busy the webmaster is). I have finished level 1.
So, either break out an image editor, or get a friend to redo them for ya! :D

Hiya,
That's one cool Mod you got over there, Taz. Any chance of you sharing some of them textures?

They will be freely available for download, when the Mod is done. :)
As for for releasing them early, I'd have to think about it, because I'm sure I will be doing more work on them, especially after I see how they look in Morrowind. I don't really want to give out "un-finished" work. Also, I have only done level 1, so there are some textures on other levels that haven't been touched yet, though most levels re-use the same textures.
Hope that helps,
Taz
