Well I finally got the game in the bargain bin - there's a shortage of games so I thought I'd finally try it ... question about the texture packs ...

What's the difference between JohnP's and Koif's? Can they be used together? People's experience? Any feedback much appreciated before I install and play :)

You've probably solved this by now - I saw you signed my guestbook as well(thanks - I answered there as well), but to reiterate here; you can use both packs at the same time.
If you install mine first, the Community Texture Pack will ask you if you'd like to keep the newer texture files that it finds. This is because my pack is newer. If you'd like to keep my latest versions(there wouldn't be much of a point installing my pack otherwise), you should then click the "Yes to all" button.
If you install mine last, you won't get a messagebox asking if you'd like to keep the older versions from the Community Pack("Koif's pack"); it will just overwrite the older files. But those older files are pretty much only my older versions anyway, as I was involved in the Community Texture Pack("Koif's pack") as well.

Dear JohnP,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I downloaded your pack over BT for the last few days - and seeded 283% back too ;) - and as I was doing it, somone sent me the Readme from your pack. so I installed Koif's first, then the microtexture pack and then finally yours. And I have to say - though you have no doubt heard this alread ;) - the difference is HUGE! As one person commented somewhere, it makes the game look the way that it should have! Thanks so much for sharing your talent and gifts.

installed the texture pack and it ruined my game, lost all my weapons, biomods, everything, removing it caused me to lose my saved games, i'm a bit pissed, but the textures rock.

From everything I have read it seems you have to install the packs on a clean install or else you experience exactly what has occurred - in essence you cannot play with a saved game after changing the textures ... or so I think ;)

since the pack really is just a set of new textures, why would this be the case? seems like a poorly designed installer to me. i've copied the textures out and reinstalled and will drop them back in manually to avoid such problems.

Well I definitely do not claim to understand the tech aspects of the changes, I just know that anecdotally this has been the case. Clean install and no problems - old install with saved games - problems. I think that there are some ini adjustments, so perhaps that is where things go askew?

This could be the case with the Community pack, because it did change a few things deeper into the system of the game. My pack however should not cause such problems, because all it does is to place new textures into a specific folder and telling the game to use those instead of the default ones.
I guess it hypothetically could happen using my pack alone as well, but it would be if the .ibd files are corrupted due to the computer not coping with the install process(the rapid opening/writing/saving of the .ibd files) in that case. But that's purely hypothetical.
The game does have a lot of inexplicable bugs that turn up willy nilly as it is though, texture packs or not.

I have a problem.
I have installed both the Koif pack and the John P pack, in that order.
The game starts up but I cannot see text in any menus, just the sliders / arrows on the GUI, so I don't know which options I am adjusting.
I am using the UK version fo the game.

I've heard of that problem before - but that was with the German version of the game.
Anyway - find ibd_patcher.exe, start it, and in the dropdown list at the top find Font. Click to highlight it, then click the red minus sign.
Try the game again now.
If that doesn't help, you may also have to bring back an original .ini file:
Go to the System folder in your Deus Ex - Invisible War install folder, and find an .ini file called DX2UI.ini. Delete it to your recycle bin(or just move it to a "safe place"). Now find an .ini file in the same folder called: Copy of DX2UI.ini. This is a backup of the original. Rename it back to DX2UI.ini.
This method(doing both those things) worked for the person who asked me the same type of question a while ago.
