I just installed DX after not playing it in a looong time. However I notice a graininess on the screen, like painted canvas. This graininess appears only in the "world", not on objects or persons. I have all video settings on max and everything looks great (as far as DX goes) except for the grainy appearance.
I've tried lowering some settings like resolution but the problem is still there. I remember I didn't have that problem before. Suggestions?

Any chance of posting some screenshots, your machine specs and your ideal resolution?
In the meantime give the both the Enhanced OpenGL and Direct3D 9 renderers a try.

Make sure you have 32bit textures enabled (sometimes it doesn't enable properly, so doublecheck that).
Also, from personal experience, on some setups (I don't know if it was the monitor or the GFX card..probably the latter but it wasn't exactly a scientific test) the graphics look like that under D3D but not OpenGL, or vice versa. So switch renderers and find one that works.
And yeah: use Chris Dohnal's stuff: it's ace.

It was the 32 bit thing! It didn't seem to catch the first time around. :D

You must have been running at some seriously low resolution to be able to make out the 16-bit dither.

No, 1280 x 1024. But the same canvas-like texture could be seen if I lowered to 600 x 400. Anyway, looks great now.
DX has pretty good graphics considering its age.

DX world-texturing really does look utterly shitty at 16-bit, for some reason. As noted, all mesh textures look fine, and it really is barely noticeable, but the walls all look like they're coated in mud.

Or actually, you know, have eyes...

I'm playing both DE and TNM and for some reason can't get the resolution to take at 1280 X 1024 which is my monitors native res. Whenever I try it, it reverts back to 800 X 600 even though it says it's at 1280 X 1024.

At 1280x1024, the
UI resets to 800x600 scaling, but everything else continues getting higher res. Are you sure this isn't what you're seeing?
If it irritates you, use the otpuifix: (

which removes the rescaling so the HUD gets progressively smaller.
