Hey Fingernail, I could offer a suggestion for working on vocals (fwiw): I played for about 8 years in a cover band and we covered everyfuckingthing under the sun. Phil Collins one minute, Metallica the next, Pink Floyd next to Muse. It was brutal for me as the vocalist, but I found that really trying to imitate such a wide variety of styles helped me to find my own voice for my own songs. Pick some people who are particularly challenging and re-key the songs on the guitar if need be, and try to imitate their phrasing. For me it was like having drum loops - it inspires other ideas and turns you on to things about your own voice you hadn't discovered. I'd particularly suggest some people that are more mainstream like Sting, Seal, Prince, and even maybe try some Radiohead and old Motown stuff - the Commodores, Stevie Wonder, etc. These guys are challenging without being fancy, and regardless of whether you like them or not stylistically, they offer a wide range of experimentation and will stretch you. I don't mean just singing along with them in the car, but really trying to nail the inflections, length of notes, and all the nuances - then you'll see stuff start to bleed over into your own voice in your style.

Don't ever do this againI put the tape in my recorder
My alarm bell rings
Does the bassist even know
There are 3 other strings?
Holy shit the vocals!
Holy shit the song!
What is it I messed up?
Where did I go wrong?
Okay skip, the next track
Okay, haha this IS a joke
Is the singer 14?
Or is he just broke?
One more shot fast forward
Skip this, play the next
Now he sings "my middle fingerrrr"
And I lol'd, then i x'd
Is this really what I want to?
Sing songs that type o'd reject
When did I become so messed up
Was I all the time on crack?
.

Crack doesn't rhyme with reject, and you don't need 'on the time' in the last line
But I lol'd. This deserves applause. \o/

this thread is certainly interesting, and it's well on it's way to being good.

This is the best advice since singing with a mouth full of rocks.

Indeed. When you can imitate "Great Gig in the Sky" from Dark Side of the Moon THEN you are ready and also I will have your babies.
