I've been having a bunch of problems with un-logged crashes.
I'm running P3 933, 512RDRAM, 15GB free ATA100, Win2K Sp4, Nvidia GeForce2 GTS 32MB.
During a load of the scenery, the program seems to take 10-20 seconds to complete the load and then just quits to the desktop.
There are no events logged...nothing.
This got worse after I undated the video drivers so I could see the map & character thumbnails.
I reduced the res to 800x600 and this helped a bunch but there were still more crashes than I wanted to deal with [sometimes].
I think I found a general solution.
Defrag!
Every time the game starts taking unusually long to load the scenes, & the choppy-ness come back, I run Defrag & the problems go away for 8-10 hours of play.
Sounds like a bug.
Anyway, just wanted pass this on. Makes the game much more fun when it doesn't cash every 20-60 minutes. ;)

The game crashes. Get used to it.
By the way, go back to SP2.

SP2?
Are you insane?
That's like saying go back to Win98 1st edition from SE

Defraging makes sense for the load times, and I can vouche for the problems your having as well. 30% Data Fragmented here and I close down more than once a hour.. gotta run it lol.

Hope it helps...it helped me! :)

Once an hour? You're lucky. Mine crashes about once every ten minutes if I'm not careful -.-'
StoneG on 9/9/2003 at 22:04
Wow!
For real?
I would have demanded a refund.
What's your computer specs?
RyushiBlade on 10/9/2003 at 00:24
It's a VPR Matrix (from Best Buy)
1.80Ghz
512MB of RAM
50GB HDD (18.6GB free space)
Pentium 4
Geforce 2 MX
Can't think of anything else you'd want. I can't think why my game crashes so often. It's usually whenever I enter a new cell (interior or exterior.) Not every time I enter a new one of course.
It runs good on my computer, as long as I close all background tasks and run it at 640 x 480 ^.^;

Yeah, that's when mine tends to die, too.
It seems as if that is the crash point for a lot of people.
I can usually see a crash coming. Graphics start getting a little choppy[sometimes], new cell loads happen more often and take longer, switching to the inventory screens takes longer...
I suspect there is a combination of things. Software instability along with RAM & CPU intensive actions.
This game also seems to really push the video cards, too.
Running at decreased res with nothing in the background seems to point to all that.
A lot depends on your motherboard, too. The motherboard chipset really defines the computer performance.
You might look at some diagnostics. It can't hurt, but I suspect you won't find anything.
Never can tell, tho.
A RAM tester [Doc Memory] from (
www.simmtester.com) is free and is as good as any.
Run it 3-5 times. Like any other of its type it's not 100% but it will find consistant RAM problems.
Try DirectX diags thusly:
Start>Run> type dxdiag and run it.
Look for newer audio & video drivers. Get them from the manufacturer [or the computer manufacturer].
Leave small offerings of cheese, crackers and a beverage in front of the monitor.
[if for no other reason than you might need a snack] ;)
One more thing: Check your computer for spyware/malware that can be hogging your system resources with Spybot Search & Destroy.

It's free but you can donate if you want.
I slipped this guy $10 last year just cause I use his app so much with troubleshooting & repair...but that's just me.
Good Luck!

Well, I may have found a fix. It's FPS Optimizer @
(
http://www.morrowind.nm.ru/)
It's small & free and seems to have worked wonders. Start it before you start Morrowind.
I had a bit of trouble with some of the settings tho.
Minor stuff.
Starting Morrowind automatically caused a few problems.
I found it better to start the optimizer & then start Morrowind.
A few other strange things with some of the other options enabled, but it's no big deal to undo things.
The "novice" default settings have done wonders so far.
There is a bit of "fog" in the distance in some strange areas sometimes, but there may be a way around that. I haven't played with it much.
Anyway, check it out.
