When you know what the theme is and see "R" under titles like Die Blechtrommel, Requiem for a Dream (video version), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma, most people get the idea.
But rating put aside, don't you think that Alien or Terminator 1 were quite a bit more serious and "mature" than Alien vs Predator crossovers and T3?

There's something very ominous about Terminator movie trailer being on an apple website.

Oh man, imagine Apple terminators; somewhere between the robots from I,Robot and the turrets from Portal.

So called iPodminators.

Great at everything except terminating.

Fantastic at desktop publishing.
Also, I find it funny when people trash T3 but hold up the first two as being fantastic films. All three had epic action pieces (or in T3's case, only one epic action piece) separated by terrible acting and dialog. There are scenes in T2 where the whiny bitch-kid is trying to explain "feelings" and "you just don't" to Arnie that make me want to put my foot through the TV.

Perhaps, but weren't all of the above rated R?

What is pity about T3 is that it failed to keep the same mood of hidden, still impending doom of the first two (presented mainly in Sarah's visions). When it comes, the uprising of the neat T-1 machines in T3 suddenly looks like videogame scene that only apears 'just by the way' in backround of characters. I want the true apocalypse back! In this aspect I am hopeful about T4 to break the mold, but the intended rating cools my expectations down.
T2 followed the mold of T1. Ok, bigger budget, several upgrades and for the time being people were happy with it. But T3 comes and BANG - again the same mold! Two times is fine, but stepping three times into the same slop is a shame.
I used to Furlong quickly. I took it as he's
supposed to behave like annoying brat. One whom only someone with patience of a machine can serve as father. More painful was to watch bored face of Nick Stahl. Nothing much of a performance from a mature actor, but then, the script didn't offer him anything significant in the first place.

Except for Alien vs Predator which was PG13. Alright, perhaps this correlation between maturity of the story and rating is not so obvious as there are exceptions, but as I look at the history of some series, it's fairly obvious to me they're getting childish. But it also has to do with the fact that once innovative films and monsters are becoming common and stereotypical and new installments sometimes look more like parodies of the originals (send my regards to 007).
