Recently I've been doing chores for my patron master Aryon at Tel Vos and after rescuing a Talvanni at shishi from some Redoran attackers he told me that to get any more chores from him I must advance to the next rank of spellwright. To advance to this level I needed one skill at 50 which was fair enough because I only needed to advance 2 more level in destruction to meet the requirement. After being promoted to spellwright I asked for more chores and Aryon told me -
“If you wish to become a wizard in House Telvanni, you must have someone to represent you in the Telvanni council hall. Find a promising Telvanni to be your mouth...”
I thought it was strange that he was talking about becoming a wizard when I had only just become a spellwright (the rank below wizard) but I thought ‘what the heck' and headed of to Balmora to find Fast Eddie - my soon to be mouth. After giving ‘fast Eddie' my silver staff of peace he agreed to become my mouth on the council so I trekked back to Tel Vos to tell Aryon the good news.
This is where I've become concerned because upon hearing that I had been successful Aryon promoted me to the rank of ‘Wizard' even though I've 10 levels yet to go to attain the required skill in destruction (my highest skill) to become a wizard. My inventory screen seems to be ok; it shows that I am indeed a wizard and my next rank is Master when I get one skill up to 70. Everything seems ok then but some confirmation that this isn't a bug someone else has encountered would be appreciated.
Another small problem that is niggling me is the fact that when promoted to wizard my journal says I was promoted to the rank of master. I'm sure this must be some sort of typo and it's meant to say wizard but again if anyone can confirm this for me I'd appreciate it.
In case it's relevant I haven't started my stronghold yet because I decided that even though I could start construction at the rank of mouth (the 5th rank) I would leave it until I became a wizard (the 7th rank) to avoid any unnecessary confusion.
Thanks for your help. :)
[EDIT]
While waiting for a reply I decided to press on with the construction of my stronghold. I got the contract fair enough from the duke in Ebonheart but then I wondered about where to get some strong souls for my stronghold. I decided that the easiest place to go was the Telvanni vault in Vivec where I knew there were two storm atronachs just waiting to give me their souls. Anyway without the ordinators seeing I broke into the first ‘trick' room which was the home of the two storm atronachs, cast soul trap, and killed them.
My question is whether or not I have messed any of the later Telvanni quests up by breaking into the trick room and killing the storm atronachs?
Like I said no one saw me breaking in and I have a bounty of 0 and to make fully sure I teleported out of the ‘trick' room to avoid entering the ‘real' vault.

I've actually encountered a similar bug in that at the rank of wizard in the mage's guild, the arch-mage dude challenged me to a duel. I proceded to duel him, and killed him. So now i'm the arch-mage right? well.. i'm only lvl 70 destruction (my highest) which means i shouldn't even be a grand wizard. but i am right now, and it says i need to be promoted to become arch-mage. so i'm busy lvlin my destruction.. hoping that one of the guild stewards will promote me once i have gained the lvl reqs.

Watch out there Red, do EVERY job from him before letting him promote you any further. I made the mistake of getting promoted as soon as possible. And I lost my chance at being magistrate, 'cause at some level, he's s'posed to give you the option of Magistrate or like, wizard lord or sumthing. But he doesn't mention the Magistrate part when you advance. Which means you might missyour chance to overthrow that guy at Tel Aruhn. I got angry when this happened and went and killed that guy, but to no avail :p (I did get some nice daedric stuff though)

Actually Red, you've just avoided being automatically promoted to Master (which is a dead end unless you have the patch for the PC version), so you've done the right thing. And I've yet to find any Telvanni quest that involves their treasury. Oh and it's actually possible to buy/steal the souls you need : Galbedir has a Winged Twilight (I think you already know of this one :p) and the Telvanni enchanter in Sadrith Mora Council house has a Greater Soulgem with a Storm Atronarch (it is good enough for your stronghold).
Btw when you've reached Wizard rank the only time he will allow you to be promoted again is after you have finished off the guys at Bal Isra (Aryon's last quest). Iirc he doesn't check for skill requirements when you have to promote after Wizard.

And just in case it makes a difference to you, if you didn't get caught there'll be no Telvanni repercussions for killing those two storm atronachs in the 'trick' room.

Thanks very much for all your help guys I appreciate it. :)
I looked up that promotion issue on Bullhonkie and the site said the following -
Q: I'm trying to advance to rank Magister in House Telvanni, but I'm told I have foresworn to the rank of Master. What's going on?
This seems to be a bug that has affected a fair share of people. What happens is that it is possible to go from the Wizard to Master rank after finishing the necessary tasks. However at this point you are not told that if you choose to advance to the rank of Master, you give up the ability to advance to the rank of Magister. To make sure this doesn't happen, you need to complete all of the requirements for the rank of Magister before you ask about advancement.
If you've found yourself stuck in this predicament but still want to advance to rank Magister, you can use the console to lower your rank back to Wizard. Then speak to Aryon to activate the text to become Magister. To lower your rank, type this into the console:
player->PCLowerRank "Telvanni"
I'm unsure what to do about the issue; as far as i understand it i should complete every single mission Aryon has to offer (the last one being the Bal Isra quest) without asking for promotion. At the end of the last Bal Isra quest Aryon will offer to promote me to either master or magister regardless of my skill level much in the same way he promoted me from spellwright to wizard even though i was 10 levels below what was required. I should choose the rank of Magister if i want to advance and challenge the Archmaster.
Is this statement true?
In particular I would like to know whether i will have to make sure i have enough skills to attain the rank of magister (i.e. one skill @80 and two skills @ 30) by the completion of the last Bal Isra quest OR whether it doesn't matter about my skills and he'll offer the promotion to magister regardless?
Thanks very much for your time and effort guys. :)

After you have attained Wizard rank Aryon no longer checks for the normal quest/skill levels requirements, but only checks whether you have completed his last quest (Bal Isra), it is possible to have 5-6 Telvanni quests not yet finished when you reach Archmagister and only good enough skills to reach Spellwright.

Thanks for that clarification WingedKagouti. :)
Interestingly after completing the quest to find a mouth for myself (fast Eddie) i went back to Aryon and he said -
"I do not have any chores for you at this time. You have done all that I would expect of a wizard. Find out what you need for advancement and speak with me again. If you need chores, speak with the councillors or their mouths."
I suspect he wont let me continue with his quests until my stronghold is completed (its still being built).
If someone could confirm my suspicion i would be grateful.

Can you still do these quests once you become Archmagister or should i make sure i've completed all the councillors quests before undertaking Aryon's last Bal Isra quest?
Myoldnamebroke on 21/7/2002 at 18:44
You're right about the need for your stronghold to finish. Once it's done you get a couple more quests from Ayron.

*nods to MONB*
As to chores, do 'em before you become ArchMagister; they seem to think it's beneath your dignity or somesuch if you're ArchMagister.
