I guess I'm a bit of a housewife, for one. :)
But yeah, I can't take most any kind of anti-depressant. Hell, I'm not even supposed to take Motrin or Tylennol if I can help it. I've got a real fragile heart murmer/graident/blood pressure balance going on here - though alcohol or caffeine isn't too bad because I can flush it out really quick with enough water. Anything much more than that can really screw with my heart rate and the way my meds react, so I stay away from them as much as possible. Even herbal stuff and vitamins are a no-no. Best thing for me is eating right, which I do really well when I feel like cooking. I even make my own yogurt and juice to help clean my digestive system and flush out all the extraneous crap in the meds (for instance, this time release chemical which is junk catalyst junk). At the same time, money is tight right now because my wife just finished school and started a new job, so I can't spend as much on fresh stuff as I'd like to, but that will be remedied soon. I think the financial strain has something to do with feeling a bit defeated as of late too.
Talked to my wife a bit tonight. She's very patient, and we've lived through worse medical stuff than this (miscarriages, being told I had 2 years to live, 8 endometrial surgeries (hers), on and on). It's just that everything was going so well. She agreed we need to see about switching to the non time-release and see what happens. I just know I can't keep on like this or I'm going to miss some really great opportunities and botch up things here at home.
Again, thanks. Just thinking out loud/spleen venting. :erg:

Ok, now that I've calmed down a bit, I suppose I see your point. I was operating under the assumption that he's mistaking the signs of depression for a reaction to the new meds. If the meds ARE causing his symptoms and they're not due to depression, it would be a mistake to treat them with an anti-depressant. I guess it would be up to a doctor to determine the cause of the problems he's having, and the best treatment. But you can stuff the whole housewife-Paxil thing you so breezily tossed out there. That was out of line, and sexist to boot.
edit: what do you mean it's not always about me? You were clearly responding to and talking to ME. You're a bit of a passive-aggressive asshole, aren't you?

Pussy. Man up. That's what you want to hear right? Some life coach kicking your ass and making you keep going when you feel like shit? Well you don't get it. None of us do. We have to kick our own asses. You will feel like you have failed. We all do. All we can do is pick our butts off the floor and have at it again. We will fail. We will let down those we care most about. And then we will get up and try again because we are men.
You have an excuse. Dont use it. Keep trying and you will be loved for it. I can't help you but I feel for you. See how that helps? Not a damn. Just keep doing your best and trying to figure it out. A good woman will understand that. And that ought to give you a boner. A good woman will understand regardless. So chill the fuck out.
You sure you don't want me to get you the stuff you want from my cousin?

But not this time. You just saw a shoe you liked the look of, that's all.

A friend of mine has horrible back pain, and the FDA removed the drug he was taking from the market because it carried an increased risk of heart disease (or something similiar). The alternatives make him feel all drugged out, or hae other side effects he doesn't like, so he just has to live with the pain.
There are all kinds of drugs that I'm sure we aren't getting that could help people because of safety risks - having an agency that advices, but doesn't prevent drugs from being available (like the FDA does) seems like it would help out a lot more people than keeping drugs off the market.
Also, and I know it sounds sketchy, but you should consider going to Mexico for pharmaceuticals. You have to get a prescription down there, but I'm sure it could be done with your medical history without too much trouble. You could probably get the stuff without a prescription, but I wouldn't want to risk getting arresting or anything, even if it is unlikely they will check you at the border.

Oh, I didn't mean YOU were passive-aggressive, GBM. I just tacked that on to the end of a post replying to you for... oh, just for the hell of it. It was just a general statement! Really! :D You must have just liked the look of that smug, disingenuous shoe.
fett, I'm sorry. Your thread shouldn't be used for petty squabbling. And I should have realized your condition probably precluded anti-depressants. Good luck with the other variety of your meds.

I've looked into that, but this particular drug (Disopyramide) isn't used much anymore, and is only made in generic form by one company - Ethex. Their whole line has been shut down so there's none available anywhere, which leaves me taking the brand name. That's not a problem for most people because they don't have the bp issue, and can switch or adjust. When my cardio guy first tried me on this drug, it was a shot in the dark, and not traditionally used for my condition, but my bp couldn't tolerate all the other recommended meds (I spent about 8 months passing out, coding, throwing up, etc. constantly). Everyone was surprised that this works, and my case even got attention from the Cardio Clinic at Tufts in Boston because of it. Still, none of the three cardio guys I see have another single patient on this stuff for the reasons I am, so they're all at a loss for what else to do, except change to the non time-released. We'll see what they say when I get back from LA at the end of the month.

Don't take advice on drugs over the internet - see your doctor. Your condition is incredibly rare and (as I'm sure you are well aware) serious and potentially life threatening.
Your particular issue with this drug and its effects on BP make sense but its also a bit of a pharmacological/physiological curiosity. Is there a paper on you, or at least a case report?
Re: The FDA. Lets not be hating on these guys because most of the reasons bodes like this do stuff that seems inconvenient to you and I are good. Here in the UK we had a combination painkiller taken off the market because it supposedly is too "useful" for people wanting to commit suicide. Problem is looooads of older people with arthritis find it the only thing that gives them relief without turning them into doped up couch potatoes. We thought it was ridiculous but its always safety first with these guys, and I can get behind that.
In your case fett I don't know why your regular meds are so hard to get hold of. You can still get that stuff here.

This. Though I'm sure you're smart enough to know that already, fett. Sorry to hear about the situation, man. I know we all have our rough patches, and I hope this is just that, a rough patch. Something that'll thin out and disappear soon enough and let the sun in again.
I can't give you any meaningful advice on what to do here, but when I usually feel depressed and confused, I find that some sort of focused activity like exercise helps a lot. I know you said you can't do the treadmill because of the meds, but if you can push yourself to do that usual bout of exercise, it just might make you feel better after that. Also, dumb thought, but... you might want to consider using the organiser on your cellphone? If nothing else, it'll at least remind you what you need to do and where if you set a time and alarm for each event.
I hope everything goes well for you. And remember not to keep things like this too close to your chest, speak to the wifey, speak to your friends, to your family, these are the people who can give you emotional support when you need it.
I hope the storm blows over soon, and wish you absolutely the best of luck. Rock the house and clinch the music and manuscript deals, man. :thumb:
