Just a random question: Would anyone take advantage of a person with little technical knowledge? [...]
If someone took the computer this way, I'd ask what relationship they had with the person who gave it away. As long as they had no contract for repairing their computers (and it wasn't a close friend) I'd say more power to them. Advanced knowledge is used for personal gain in a lot of ways in modern society without this being regarded as morally ambiguous.

Just a random question: Would anyone take advantage of a person with little technical knowledge? For instance, let's say someone with little idea of how to take care of a computer damages their Windows install with bloatware and other garbage and decides that their computer needs to be replaced. The computer is fairly new and decent. Would anyone relieve said person of their "useless" possession if offered without saying anything other than "thanks"?
I do it all the time on the classified section of our local newspaper. The time I spend fixing it usually equals the amount of money I charge people when I resell it. I don't do it for money, I do it for fun. I recently got a Core 2 Duo computer about 1-2 years old and a AMD 2200+ computer for $50. I fixed the AMD and sold it for $80. I kept the Core 2 Duo, and added a video card. Gave it to my stepson. He loves his new computer. I also love it when the towers come with a Certificate of Authenticity on them. Makes it easier to just install new software and get rid of bloatware.
Your question is like people who sell a car that doesn't run because of a chain of simple mechanical problems, i.e. timing, spark, fuel problems. A good mechanic can fix it and sell it. It takes expertise. Nothing wrong with it.

Well, that's all I need. The culmination of several weeks of increasingly assheaded behaviour is the shocking admission that CCCToad has been deliberately baiting Rug Burn Junky. My mouth is agape, my eyes are a-gog, my heart is a-flutter, and we'll see CCCToad next week when it's 2010 and we don't play that sort of stupid playground shit anymore because we're all grown up.
Can you make that 2011? His posts have gotten increasingly painful to read on GenGaming too.

This is an intriguing view.

This is why, on the spectrum of society, used car salesmen are reviled even more than lawyers.

Nothing wrong with buying something cheap with the plan to fix it up and sell it, but to actively take advantage of someone's ignorance is kind of shitty. Where the line between those two is drawn is debatable.

Tell me your job and I'll tell you how you take advantage of someone else's ignorance or idleness.

He's a professional Billy Idol impersonator. So how's he going to use that?
