Ok, now its my turn to need some help!
I FINALLY got my new computer (after waiting nearly a year after the old one crashed) and now that the other stuff is all set up, it is time to get Thief going again. OK, so here's my issues. (And yes, I have searched the forums. But searching for 'too dark' gets me more about the dark engine than technical difficulties!)
I used Tafferpatcher to install T2 - it seems to *run* fine, textures sort of suck, but it runs fine! I even get movies. (Which is more than I can say when I tried setting it up on my laptop before I got this new machine.) (ANd yes, I had it install ddfix, etc.) However in the dark areas. . .its REALLY dark, as in pitch black, even with Gamma turned up full. Optimally, I'd rather gamma NOT be turned up full, because that makes the old textures look worse! lol But yeah, its so dark that I can't see a thing, and can't even tell if I'm moving or not in a short corridor. Much less seeing doors and things until they are picked up in the focus. (Note: My gamma and monitor display has been good for everything else so far. Graphics, Sims 3, Guild Wars 2, movies. This issue with Thief 2 is the first time I've had any difficulty.)
My second issue, is setting up TG. It installs fine. But. . .yup. As soon as I try to run it, it crashes. I read over the faqs and tweaked it so I'm running as admin, and its in compatibility mode (I've tried several different settings for that - no change). After installing the tg fix thingy, I get the initial intro movie. . .THEN it crashes. I get a brief glimpse of a blank menu graphic (no text, no logo, just the UI), but it crashes too fast to even see if clicking on stuff there works. I am unsure of what else to try to get that running properly. The 'funny' thing is. . .I had this exact same trouble when I tried to set TG up on the old XP laptop as well. It installed fine, but crashed immediately when I tried to run it. I didn't bother with the issue then, since the laptop was so old anyway, but this is a new machine and I should not be having this trouble!
TDS installed and runs without a problem. But, naturally, thats not the one I will want to play most. :P
I am now running with Windows 7 (64)
Any help getting these two playable would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere, so I'll ask the obvious...did you install the new (unofficial) 1.19 patch? And when you say you used the "tg fix" thing, do you mean (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733) this?

Um. No, I did not install any patch. Just installed from the disks. I was not aware of any patch, official or unofficial. Yes, the TFix is what I used. (I did try running the game first. . .but it crashed without doing anything else. After the TFix installed, I got the first movie. . .then the crash. I guess thats progress? lol)
Looking at the TFix thread, it includes the patch, however.

Oh, what a relief!!! That is SO Much better, Brethren! Its not even funny. The textures even look sane again and I can once again see in dark places. I have saved the patch in case I have to reinstall again sometime. Fanmissions. . .here I come!
Now, if I can get TG to run instead of crashing, I'll be good to go.
THANK YOU so very much. That was much less of a headache than I anticipated. *hugs*

that crash with TG looks like a resource issue. did you do a clean, fresh install of the game? check your res folder, you should have 12 crf files there.

After the literally worldwide coverage of the patches, it's astounding to me that people are still managing to have not heard of it.

Not having Internet, or a computer to access it, is still a widespread issue, as is pervasive disbelief that it is an issue, no matter how bad the economy has gotten, or how many people manage to state online, through borrowed computers or temporary services, that they are struggling with various restrictions to their online use, or will be, when making an announcement regarding relocation.

Hmm. Thats interesting. I check my res file and there are *NO* crf files in there. The folder is completely empty. So I checked my install disks. . .and I don't see the res folder on any of those either. At least not unpacked. Any idea what I am looking for to copy them over into the installed folder?

I haven't been around to hear of it. Kind of hard to hear of something if you're not around. . .and when you come back, you aren't likely to read back a year's worth of stuff in case you missed a patch you didn't know was coming. My computer died completely last year. . .and I've been saving up for the last year to get a new one. The ancient laptop I was stuck with was not capable of much, and I ended up putting a LOT of stuff aside for it. So. . .yeah, people have reasons not to have heard of stuff that went on here.
And no, I'm still not caught up. I've done searches in relation to the problem - but I haven't read for the sake of reading yet.

Congrats on getting a new system, upgrading your Thief experience, and jumping back in!
