From the Arx Fatalis Official Tech Probs board, for those who haven't ventured there:

We found some problems under XP and are aware of this. To avoide most of the crashes make sure that you have a swap file with 800 MB minimum. Also turn off the antialiasing function of your graphics card. If you have a kyro2 please use the driver version 14028. If you have problems with ATI cards don´t use driver version 6.13.10.6015. The driver versions 6.13.10.3xxx should work fine.

Yeah... and I still can't get it to work. I'm really displeased with the sense of apathy I get from them.

Apathy? They've released what amounts to a tech demo, and they're in the extreme throws of bug hunting and wrapping up their game. Not to mention the fact that English isn't their primary language, and that they're a small development house that can't afford to hire someone to just watch the boards. The fact that Raf has come to this board to address our concerns makes me feel that they are far less than apathetic. They're just very busy, and I think cutting them a little slack about responding to issues when they don't have solution would be only fair.
BTW, I turned off AA on my GeForce 3.. Et voila! No crashes, no major slow downs!

Yeah? I have a GeForce 2... and I can't figure out how for the life of me.... How'd you do it?

As someone who fretted for days trying to get the game to work before someone finally posted the right tip, I have to say that I think Arx's biggest problem with the demo is a communication one.
When I hear 'demo' I don't think tech demo, or aplha release, or 'unstable but check it out anyway', I automatically expect a polished, at least almost finished game, cut down to just a small segment of the final gameplay. I think if it had been made clear that this was just a tech and gameplay demo which was likely to be very unstable then I at least wouldn't have been so frustrated. Well I probably would ;) but I wouldn't have frowned upon Arkane at the time quite as much :)
Still, even with this in mind, the demo is quite exceptionally unstable, and given the low budget, small studio limitations, will it really be possible to iron out all these bugs in just a couple of months? I just hope that Arkane and/or Fishtank respect the game and the public enough to take the time needed to make the game what it can be. I would hate to see the game relegated to the status of 'another classic that only a small cult are willing to play' because it's full of fatal flaws.

So what exactly did you end up doing to get the demo to run Entropy?

I realize it's probably my video drivers (I have an ATI Radeon 8500), but I was wondering if anyone else has had the problem that I've been having with ARX. I haven't seen it mentioned in the posts, but when I open up the book in the game, it seems that the text on the Journal page isn't showing up. Occasionally I'll see it flicker for just a frame or 3 and then it disappears. So I can't read the jounal entries. :(
Has anyone else had that problem (and maybe fixed it??).

I set my desktop resolution to 640x480, the default of the game. It seems to have problems when it switches video modes, so if you then change the resolution in game, when you go to play the game again you'll have to use the resolution you switched it to for your desktop res or it will have the same problem. I happen to have a Diamond TNT2, and one of the utilities that the drivers come with lets you save and restore your icon locations, so it wasn't a huge hassle for me to do this a number of times :) Once I found out that this was the solution that is... :tsktsk:
