I have just purchased a copy of Deus Ex....yes I know a little late but hey, at leased I'm playing it now. And might I add its the best game since well...Thief2.
Anyway enough of the ramblings, I have a sound issue that someone might be able to help me with. I have a really old P3 450 running 128MB memory and a 8 meg video card. The reall issue is that I have an intergrated sound card on my crappy SiS motherboard. It uses a C media CMI8330 chipset that is ancient now. All drivers are the latest versions.
Issue: DX runs fine in window mode at 800 Xm 600. The moment I go to full screen, at a lower res and somebody in the game speaks the whole game crashes. It only happens when there is a spoken section. Normal ambient music is OK.
Any ideas or advice (apart from get a new system coz I already know that) would be appreciated.

first off make sure you've got the latest patch for deus ex installed (unless you bought the "game of the year" edition of deus ex, in that case you dont need to patch). i think the latest version is v1.112fm. next, if you havent already, try looking for a solution to your problem at this page:

if all else fails, play around with all the different settings in the options. i onced had a save game crash problem no one could help me with, so i tried messing around with the different settings and hey presto i could save the game without crashing again.
personally, i've never had a problem with sound in deus ex so i can't help ya with a direct solution, but i hope you get it fixed soon. i know how frustrating it is to not be able to play the game properly.

fatso the womble, try going into your DeusEx.ini file, find any line with "DirectSound" in it, and changing it's value (False to True or True to False).

Believe it or not, fatso the wombat, I had exactly the same problem! Crashed whenever someone spoke. Sadly, I couldn't fix it, so I played the entire game through twice, in safe mode, in a window as you have. I would just resize the window to fit the full screen each time I played the game. From recollection I also disabled 3D sound in safe mode.
Fortunately, it didn't affect my enjoyment of the game.
