I love this, is it actually a recently coined phrase or does it date back to something? I think I first became aware of it when Gordon Brown started talking earlier this year about inheriting a moral compass from his parents (his father a priest), as if he'd been handed down some dusty contraption in an oak presentation case.
Either that or it's coming to a cinema near you this winter: Phillip Pullman's THE MORAL COMPASS.
