the FM is extracted in its own folder inside the FMs folder, right?
DromEd_Newbie on 16/1/2016 at 03:00
Yes,
Each FM has a folder in: C:\Games\Thief2\FMs

Good thought! But it didn't change anything. It's so frustrating that I can run the original game from the Thief2 shortcut without issue. I wish I knew more about FMSel to debug it. No messages in Windows error logs either.

tried the compatibility modes? long shot as well, but still. might nudge w10 into submission.

DromEd_Newbie, and you have all these files in main Thief2 folder:
7z.dll
D3DX9_43.dll
ffmpeg.dll
fmsel.dll
ir41_32.dll
ir50_32.dll
lgvid.dll
voodoo47 on 17/1/2016 at 22:59
ah, I'm thinking that you are thinking that w10 is deleting some files after first run. good idea.
DromEd_Newbie on 17/1/2016 at 23:20
Yes, all files are there.
Also, none are read only.

It really does sound like a permission issue. Have you checked the directory permissions ?

I agree! I have changed permissions on every file and folder to Full Control.
I was able to get the event viewer to write to an error log:
