the gog version of t2 includes ddfix 1.3.11 and it should work out of the box on win7.. but it is still recommended to patch it up with tafferpatcher.

Thanks DJ Riff, I got everything up and running on Windows 7 now. Has anyone seen this version of Thief 2? It's by Good Old Games. It states that it works with Windows 7. Can this be right? Do you think this version has the ddfix? Would this be a way to get it installed and working on Windows 7 without the TafferPatcher?
Yes, it contains ddfix version 1.3.11. It's the last version made by Timeslip, so it makes the game work on Win7, but I don't know if it supports additional features like post processing, high-res texture replacement, frame rate limit, etc.
You can ask for details on GOG forum:

Thanks guys. After reading though that forum I believe it is definitely best to install the retail version of Thief 2 with the TafferPatcher. GOG is a pretty cool website though.

I copied and pasted my T2 installation from my XP machine to a new Win7 laptop and it works perfectly. But I'm happier if I have a few copies and thought I'd like a new copy so I used tafferpatcher and from that point on, everything seemed to go **** up. It worked when I ran the normal Thief but I quit to use it through Darkloader and after that, that annoying round thing that indicates something is working away in the background went on and on and on. Even reverting to using my old T2 with Darkloader didn't resolve it. I uninstalled and all returned to normal(ish) Now, I'm of the opinion that it might be coincidental with other laptop things going on but I just wondered if there was anything in Tafferpatcher that might cause the Win7 laptop to grind to a snail's pace before I try it again.

I doubt it. At least I have 3 copies of T2 on my Win7 machine installed via TP and they're working just fine.
Safe ways of cloning installations are:
a) Install Thief2 from original discs multiple times
ORb) Use your old (non-TP) installation of Thief2 as the source for installation via TP
ORc) Use Darkinst Editor Utility to convert all paths to relative and then copy the Thief2 folder (should work with all installed patches, check ddfix.ini for correct paths too)

Thanks DJ Riff. My copy/paste method has always worked, I just wanted to try Tafferpatcher. I'll give it another go.
Edit. Yup - 2nd time of trying was fine although I did the minimal.

Thanks a million for this! It finally worked!
I almost lost my hope and passion for thief since I couldn't make t2 or t2x run because all new windows and super fast GPU cards etc.
But now I'm running T2 and also T2X with 1440x900 res. and with full 90 fps. A-w-SOME!!:D

Evening
Doing some beta testing and the same thing that always happens when play T2 when i have AA enabled is stutter. Now you may think, just disable AA, but I'm running a GTX480/Corei5.
And when I say stutter its not as simple as that, said 'stutter' is only noticeable when you look around or look around while moving etc. just walk in a straight line or side step and not looking around while doing so and you dont notice any of said stutter.
So I have a few questions..
1. is there a work around for this with TP and/or DDfix...?
2. whats the best way to show in-game fps in T2..? (I tried fraps and the overlay dosent work)

Is it in OM or FM or both? I've cranked up all my AA and AF settings (ATI HD 6800 @ 1600x1200) and still couldn't drop FPS lower than 50. Sometimes setting LayeredOverlay to 0 in ddfix.ini improves performance greatly, but that may be not your case.

FRAPS works for me when I run it as Administrator (Win7 x64).

It only seems to only be noticeable in FMs, tried the "layeredOverlay 0" setting and it made it worse! Found this issue with fraps, it only works when AA is turned off :-(
