1. Visit a friend with a PC and a CD drive. Take a thumb drive and the thief CDs with you.
2. Install the game on the thumb drive
3. Back home, copy the game folder on your HDD (e.g. to C:\Games, but not into a protected folder)
4. Run Tafferpatcher on the game. Then just start thief2.exe or make a shortcut to the desktop. No need for a CD/DVD drive to run it.
Thanks for the reply.
Well, I happen to have an old laptop with a CD drive and a portable back up hard drive, so I tried installing Dark Project into the hard drive but I got an error message talking about a Windows NT and Direct X problem. I tried installing Thief 2 and it just hung and went nowhere. Am I doing something wrong? And Thief 2 has two disks - if I can install it onto my backup hard drive and then move those files into the new laptop, can I run it without using the disks again?
I'm wondering if it's just not easier to buy the games from GOG or Steam (I'd never heard of Steam until yesterday, which might tell you something about me). GOG sells a bundle of Gold, 2, and 3 for $19. Could I buy that and download directly to my new computer and run things without any issues?

This was covered in the FAQ

Solution 2:Go to Start, then Run, then type d:\setup.exe -lgntforce, where d:\ is your CD-rom/DVD-rom drive. (note: That's -lgntforce with a lowercase "L")

Ack, the FAQ. Like I said, you have to talk to me like I'm an idiot.
With the help of the FAQ and your idea about the thumb drive, I now have Thief Gold and Thief 2 running on my new laptop. I'll have to figure out if I want to go through the trouble of installing Deadly Shadows. Meanwhile, also need to figure out setting up fan missions and getting a wireless mouse / keyboard. But I think the hard part is done. Thanks much.

The soundtrack for T2 on GoG has music for the Pagan village in Blood, but no music plays when I am there. Pity, as I quite like it. Is this normal?

Could be. I just replayed the mission in NewDark (using latest Tafferpatcher, version "218") as well as non-NewDark Thief 2 (v1.18). The sad tune which plays in most parts of the pagan village has to be started by Garrett entering the house where Dewdrop and her dead owner Lily lie. Once Lily's ghost appears, the tune should start. However, the player may complete the mission without going into that house (the first one found after starting the mission, close to a waterfall in a large stone face). In that case, one does not hear the sad tune throughout the village, and after that, the tune won't play anyway.
So, if you have a saved game from before entering the portal in the village, backtrack your way to the southwest edge of the village, enter the house and see whether that makes Lily's ghost appear. The sad tune should then start immediately.
If the tune does not play when the ghost conversation is over, then something is amiss.

Thanks, I'll check that out next time I am there. Don't think I have been in that house in a while.

[I am not sure its the best thread, so please mercy ;)]
I got my first experience with ultra wide monitors and now its a time for a Thief 2 :).
With "Taffer Patcher + NewDark Graphics Settings" game runs with 2560x1080 easly by default and looks pretty awsome but...
... sides of a screen are stretched (screen). Its quite visible and distorts the view. The best what ive done by myself was to change manualy FOV, but it only change horizontal angle leaving stretched sides.

Somebody got experience with 21:9 picture size? Is there a solution?
Thanks in advance.

that is how ultra wide works, I believe.
