They were much more realistic than the earthquake effects in Falling Down, which were repetitive and became quite annoying by the end of that mission.
But the interval between earthquake effects in
Falling Down were also randomised?

Were they? They were too frequent. If they were randomized, they must have had very narrow choice of time intervals.

Looks like 8-16 seconds.
We're going off-topic here.

In mission 1, I seem to be the only dope who couldn't figure out how to satisfy the objective to "find out what is going on," or somesuch phrasing. I've done everything else; I was even in the loft at the end, so I know where it is. But I'm stuck on that one objective!
I went down into the grotto, found the sacrifice in progress, pressed my nose up against the forcefield, and saw everyone vanish, leaving red fog behind. I've found a few readables, but none that I've seen triggers that objective. (The combination panel on the attic safe is not frobbable; I assume that only comes into play in a later mission.)
What am I missing?
(I'm hoping that posting this here will immediately cause me to find the solution in the next eighteen seconds of gameplay.)

notes on the coffee tables in the northwest and southwest rooms on the first floor must be read.

Thanks, Otto. And of course, immediately I posted that question, I discovered the answer for myself!
I'm about to dive into part III; tally ho!

I really like this mission, apart from the fact that I can't find my room back (with Jenevere)?
What do I miss here?
Anonymous? Did I read that correctly?

this was my contest entry, you are on act 3 then? your room is the same one you started in, top floor, northeast corner. you have to put jen down in the room to finish the mission, not just enter the room with her.

Is there some sort of trick to get it to work? I try to start (any of the 3 missions/difficulty settings) I get a brief moment of sound (in normal I hear a woman yell Basso!,) then everthing sort of freezes. It looks awesome, but I cannot do anything except go to task manager and end the process. To be a little more precise, it is more like the frame rate drops to about 1 frame every 2-3 minutes. I move the mouse a bit, then wait, and eventually the camera shifts a bit. Move the mouse again and wait, then again the camera shifts a bit. It's rather frustrating. I've ended every task I can, I've uninstalled all the T2 upgrades (skies, water, ddfix, ntex, ep, etc...) and the same thing occurs. I managed, with absolutely everything removed to get the frame rate all the way up to 1 frame every 1-2 minutes instead of 2-3 minutes, but that is still unplayable :(
My machine is rather beefy, or so I thought.
WinXP SP3, 2.8Ghz CPU, 2G RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4650 w/1G RAM, Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme.

I remember with the OS Millennium you had
to put in or remove a semi-colon in one of the
text files. If that don't work, unplug the
Internet & defrag your hard drive.if it still don't
work. Try the 4gb patch. It works with freeing
up space in your RAM. It works for TDM, but
not sure it'll work with T2...
