What light gem? That's clearly not a device for determining how visible he is, but it sure as hell looks like it would get him caught for all the light it's throwing out. It's also blocking a lot of the screen, so again, clearly it's not for showing the player how hidden they are. All the Glyphs say it's something unrelated to a little ol' HUD item. If that thing replaces the light gem HUD, that's very unwieldy and disruptive compared to something you just glance at or notice just outside your fovea at any time, and no need to bring it out of inventory to look at more often than a watch or compass.
I bet 100 bucks that's the light gem in the screenshot. By the way, some people owe me money when I bet that the game was developed exclusively for the next gen of consoles

Too early to cash-out.

Interesting theory, but...
What if the lore of Thief itself, had everything to do with the lore of the games it came from? Hmmmm, mister? If that were true, then you could almost say that the Light Gem owes more connection to its predecessors, than to its own version of the lore! Besides, the Light Gem brings the game that much more alive! You have this beautiful hypnotic Gem that is alive in this world. Granted, it was a stripped down world, which made the Gem stand out even more. But to take that central element and pluck it right out of the game is disastrous. When the game first came out, the Light Gem was one of the unique and powerful things about the damn game! Its a legacy! Why make a game that tries to emulate games of its time and slap the Thief name on? Why not stay true to the games roots and be different than the rest. Show you are better by doing something that the others are not?!
The lore of Ultima/Wizardry/whatever has absolutely no relation to Thief's. If you really want it to be, write the damn crossover fanfic yourself. It's like trying to claim that Thief's lore is somehow connected to the lore in Goldeneye 64 because Goldeneye 64 was the first to have an objective screen. If it's a good idea, it'll get poached -- that's the nature of the industry. And you are seriously putting way, way too much stock into what's ultimately little more than an intuitive (for its time) UI element.

I'll take that bet because its clear you haven't read any of the playthrough of the start which clearly states that Garrett has a talisman that shines in response to runes or something, and which has that very screenshot in it.
Besides, the size and location of that item make no sense for it to be a lightgem and EM have stated that they are using a different UI element - the "Cloak".
Your postings in this thread seem ignorant at best.

Sorry for my ignorance, where can I find this playthrough?

Have a look on the Game Informer site. It's either there or on one of the other recently linked story updates.

dethtoll, please, you have no clue what you are talking about. Until you have played through Ultima I-VIII, and MM I-VI, and Wizardry I-VII, you are simply out of your element. I cannot go into detail like I want to (because of the negative attention you draw to the topic), nor can I address you like I want, as it would end with me getting banned. But, I believe that I *can* still tell you to go get a girlfriend and give your hands a break already!!

When the devs themselves state that they drew upon this element from that game they liked, what then, death?
