Why do you want a light gem for in a ninja fighting game?
Exactly...A basic, trendy, tacked-on "stealth mode" feature will do just fine for this type of game.

Yes, that's exactly what's going to happen here, based on a few interview quotes and some jpgs.
They make medication for autism, you know.

I was thinking about this last night while replaying Call of Cthulhu - since we've seen references to Garrett having a blur or dark tint around the edge of the screen, indicating he's hidden from view, is this initiated by the player (by hitting a "sneak" key, like in CoC or Penumbra/Amnesia or Dishonored or any number of other games), or will light sources and shadows just automatically determine whether Garrett is visible or not (and subsequently, activate "The Cloak")? Logic says it's got to be the latter - why would dousing torches and such matter if you could just hit your sneak key? But I guess all bets are off with the reboot.
Even if that's what they do, the game is just not going to be the same if you don't have a light gem type device, where there are multiple levels of visibility. You're basically eliminating all the ambiguous encounters Thief fans have gotten so used to over the years, where guards awareness raises from level 0 to level 1 or 2, and they say things like "What's that over there?" or "Who comes unto me?" It's gonna be either complete invisibility, or full awareness, which imo, ruins a lot of the fun of the game.

Yep, that damn old pesky Light Gem again. Alluring to behold, and so integral to the core gameplay.

How? It's a UI element.

You're quite right Brethren, a Thief game does need that graded concealment.
I hadn't even thought about a stealth on/off button. That would be dreadful.

ANSWER THE QUESTION.

If you insist...
The Light Gem was integral to the core gameplay of Thief because, if you hid in the shadows, you were safe, whereas if you were out in the broad daylight, everyone could see you. The Light Gem was the vehicle that allowed you to do that. Now go smoke some more of SE's mugwump jism.

The light gem provided instant feedback, with no need to make any assessments of an imperfect simulation. In 1st-Person, without peripheral vision or being able to flick the eyeballs and gather data naturally, and not being able to do it as quickly and efficiently with the player model as real eyes even if there were controls for that, the light gem compensates for that very well. To know if it's an issue, turn off Thief's light gems. Each game can be modded very easily for that. See if it's just a challenge to play or if it breaks the playability at times.
I suppose buttons that rotated the camera to create the flick of the eyes could be programmed, but of course that wouldn't happen. They would move twice as fast as lean and hold-to-crouch.
