But an element you like in a game had nothing to do with the lore. Does every game that now has mantling have some lore link to Thief? No.
You guys are nuts.

I'm minded to think that lore (or feature sets) hardly matters. Whereas quality matters a lot.
Story telling is a two way process. The teller/developer/designer/whoever might throw some stuff out there, but it's up to the audience to do the anthropomorphizing, imagine the details and join the dots. If T4 starts with Garrett in the shower realising it was all a dream - as long as the game is good enough in its own right - the audience will find a way to dig it.
Also, T4 ain't going to be a Looking Glass game. And with a decade of new influences to inspire it since T3 even, insisting it's a direct, pure blood descendent of only 1990s games seems a bit churlish.
That's not to say that the evolution of Looking Glass Thief isn't fascinating in its own right, but it's not much more than an interesting historical footnote by now.
Goldmoon, you're not anticipating T4. You're anticipating the imaginary sequel you wanted umpteen years ago. I've no problem with that - and I see no reason why the differences between LGS era Theif and the new Thief shouldn't be interesting - but if you're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, well, it ain't gonna fly.

Why does everyone want it to be only a footnote, never pushed into the future at all?
Why is everyone fine with doing away with 90% of the game's characteristics?
Of course EM isn't making that old thing again. What we want isn't a 1998 thing, but a collection of elements rarely seen in one place, and TDP is not the sum of what we want in Thief.

@Goldmoon Dawn: I'll probably regret this - but can you tell me what the (supposed) Ultima legacy in Thief is, beyond a vague "Ultima Underworld is linked to Ultima, and Thief comes out of similar design sensibilities as the Underworld games"?

It's got nothing to do with 'want'. Just what is. It's a different generation of developers with different interests, insights and inspirations.

It seems so. On several occasions (last time on QuakeCon LGS panel, AFAIR) Harvey Smith pointed out that concept of the world in Thief series was always a sort of outline, a sketch. His team did the same thing in Dishonored. So, "the lore" is more like a set of bits and pieces assembled by player imagination.

Of course, it remains to be seen exactly what sort of abomination they deliver. ;)

As long as it don't have teeth in its forehead, I'll probably be alright with it.
