Well, there are 3 versions in the editor package:
1. "Opt" - allows to start level from editor/supports some debug things, has console. It is pretty slow version.
2. Original 1.1 copy - doesn't allow start level directly from editor but seems to work with any levels (original or created in editor). EXE file has date October 2004.
3. "Release" - doesn't allow start level directly from editor but seems to work with any levels. EXE file has date November 2004.
Therefore, it seems as "Opt" is intended for level design and "Release" is for playing levels.
My first question is: does anybody (probably David or somebody else) know what is the difference between 2 and 3? It seems as something was fixed in original 1.1 exe and perhaps it was done when TTLG T3Ed Beta-testing Team provided feedback about found bugs...
My second question is probably result of some my error but... When I try to play tutorial5 level with "Release" or original 1.1 T3Main version, I can notice that movement of camera is "jerky" especially in starting place. Using Fraps I found out that FPS are really high (~100 FPS). It seems as very short performance drop that couldn't be recognized by Fraps is present. When I use "Opt" version, FPS are not so high but "jerky" movement is gone.

I don't know if this is what you're experiencing, but DX2 basically had a software-based deadzone on the controller. This made control easier on the Xbox, but with a mouse it made it feel like the game was running slow. Since it's the same engine, maybe this somehow slipped into Thief.

Funny you said that, Durinda D'Bry, because the performance comparison
is the first thing I tried. The differences are "almost" invisible on my setup, but I thought "T3ManOpt.exe" was a little faster...maybe because I wish T3MainOpt stands for T3MainOptimized, o well.

Opt is Optimised for the editor, lower FPS due to the 2MB of debug code, console etc etc.
If I recall correctly 2 and 3 are the same thing, one was just shipped with the editor for those who deleted their original rather than rename it.

David 2 and 3 exe files has slightly (if it is possible to use this word for executable code comparision :) ) different content. But, well, if Ion guys didn't provide you with some info about changes in "Rel" version, perhaps nobody could answer on my little question. Anyway great thanks for reply.

Thanks, Durinda D'Bry I've not read the readme carefully :)
The "Shipping" and "Release" are indeed not binary identical.
The "jerky" thing is quite strange though. Maybe that was why I believed
T3ManOpt was faster.

Sorry, you're right. I was comparing shipping with original, which are the same.
I don't know what the difference between Release and Shipping is.
Maybe release is pre-patch, although that would not explain the build date.

Opt is for Optimized.
But that's optimized as compared to the full Debug version, not the Release version.
I'm surprised the binaries for the release are different and yet both work for the fan missions. I don't recall making any changes that should affect release significantly between the two.
ETA:
Reading another thread here, I think I do remember something that's different between the two. I believe custom sounds will only work with the Release executable from the editor. In the original, the sounds would only load from our packaged files. Now they'll also load off disk if present(since we couldn't(within time/download size limitations) provide you with the ability to change our packaged files) I believe I had to change the release executable for this.

Ok, thank you very much for this information.
Harwin real name is Alex Duran, right? Then also great thanks for your outstanding work for Thief community!
BTW: maybe you have some solution/comment for (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94088) this deadly problem?
